NEW DELHI (India CSR): Svatantra Microfin Private Limited’s latest annual report for the financial year 2024-25 provides a detailed insight into its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending and fund allocation strategy. While the company continued to support initiatives in areas such as healthcare, women empowerment, and community development, the report also highlights an unspent CSR amount of Rs 1.87 crore. According to the company’s annual report, this amount has been set aside for ongoing projects that require longer implementation timelines, particularly those focused on girls’ empowerment. During the year, the company spent around Rs 1.59 crore on various CSR activities, reflecting its continued engagement with underserved communities. The remaining funds have been transferred to a designated Unspent CSR Account in compliance with legal provisions. This approach shows how the company is balancing immediate social impact with long-term development goals through planned and structured CSR execution.

CSR Obligation and Financial Overview

The annual report states that Svatantra Microfin calculated its CSR obligation based on the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013. The company reported an average net profit of over Rs 173 crore for the last three financial years. Based on this, its CSR obligation for the financial year 2024-25 was approximately Rs 3.46 crore.

During the year, the company spent around Rs 1.59 crore on various CSR initiatives. This resulted in an unspent amount of Rs 1.87 crore as of March 31, 2025. According to the report, this amount has been formally transferred to a separate CSR account on April 28, 2025, ensuring compliance with Section 135(6) of the Act.

The report highlights that such transfers are part of the legal framework that allows companies to carry forward funds for projects that extend beyond a single financial year.

Reason Behind Unspent CSR Funds

The annual report highlights that the unspent funds are linked to the nature of ongoing projects rather than delays or underperformance. Certain CSR initiatives, especially those related to infrastructure or long-term social development, require careful planning and phased implementation.

According to the report, the company has identified specific projects that will be executed over multiple years. These projects have been classified as “ongoing projects” under CSR rules, allowing the company to allocate funds in stages.

This approach ensures that funds are used effectively and not rushed at the end of the financial year. It also reflects a shift toward more sustainable and long-term social investments.

Focus on Girls’ Empowerment and Social Development

A major portion of the unspent CSR funds has been allocated to projects linked with the Ananya Birla Foundation. The annual report states that these initiatives are focused on the care, education, and empowerment of girls.

The report highlights that the company aims to support structured programs that address issues such as access to education, health services, and skill development for young girls. These programs are designed to create long-term impact rather than short-term outcomes.

One of the key initiatives under this approach is the NEEMAR project, which is being developed as a multi-dimensional program. According to the annual report, the project includes planning, resource allocation, and identification of beneficiaries, which takes time before full-scale implementation begins.

CSR Activities and Social Impact in 2025

Despite the unspent funds, the company carried out several CSR initiatives during the year. The annual report highlights that its activities reached different sections of society, including women, artisans, and patients.

The report states that around 832 women benefited from empowerment programs that focused on skill development and livelihood support. In addition, 125 weavers received assistance aimed at strengthening their income opportunities.

In the healthcare sector, the company supported 818 patients dealing with mental health issues. The report highlights that access to treatment and care was provided through partnerships with healthcare organisations.

Another notable initiative was the use of telemedicine services, which enabled people in remote areas to access medical advice. This helped bridge the gap between rural communities and healthcare providers.

Environmental and Community Initiatives

The annual report also highlights efforts toward environmental sustainability. During the year, Svatantra Microfin supported the plantation of over 7,500 trees. This initiative is part of its broader focus on ecological balance and environmental responsibility.

The report states that CSR activities are aligned with national development priorities, including environmental protection and community well-being. These efforts aim to create a balanced approach where economic growth is supported by social and environmental responsibility.

Consolidated CSR Performance at Group Level

The annual report also provides a consolidated view of CSR activities, including its subsidiary operations. At the group level, the total CSR obligation stood at approximately Rs 7.82 crore.

Out of this, around Rs 4.81 crore was spent during the year, while Rs 3.01 crore remained unspent for ongoing projects. The report highlights that these funds have also been handled in accordance with legal provisions, ensuring that they are used for designated purposes.

This broader view reflects the scale at which the group operates and its commitment to structured CSR planning.

Governance and Oversight Mechanism

The management of CSR activities at Svatantra Microfin is overseen by a dedicated CSR Committee. According to the company’s annual report, the committee includes senior leadership and independent members who review project progress and fund allocation.

The report states that the committee met multiple times during the year to monitor implementation and approve future initiatives. This governance structure ensures that CSR activities are aligned with the company’s policy and regulatory requirements.

In addition, the company’s auditors have confirmed compliance with CSR provisions, including the transfer of unspent funds to the designated account.

Balancing Immediate Impact with Long-Term Vision

The CSR disclosures indicate that Svatantra Microfin is balancing short-term interventions with long-term development goals. While direct spending has addressed immediate needs such as healthcare and livelihood support, the unspent funds are tied to projects that aim to deliver sustained impact.

According to the annual report, this approach allows the company to focus on quality and effectiveness rather than speed of spending. It also ensures that large projects are properly planned and executed.
