NEW DELHI (India CSR): Beyond balance sheets and burgeoning retail footprints, a company’s true wealth often lies in its unwavering commitment to the communities it serves. For Trent Limited, the Financial Year 2025 marks another significant stride in this direction, as its latest Integrated Annual Report reveals a steadfast dedication to corporate social responsibility (CSR). This deep dive into Trent’s FY25 CSR spending uncovers not just financial figures, but a vibrant tapestry of initiatives designed to empower individuals, foster sustainable development, and enrich lives across India.

This guiding principle informs Trent’s holistic reporting approach, aiming to provide stakeholders with a comprehensive view of how the company creates value using both financial and non-financial resources. The Integrated Annual Report for FY 2024-25 underscores Trent’s commitment to balancing profitability with sustainable development and meaningful social impact, emphasizing agility, scale, and desirability in its operations. The company’s governance framework is built on upholding the highest standards of ethics, fairness, and transparency, guided by the Tata culture and ethos, ensuring responsible business conduct across all levels of the organization.

Decoding the Financials: Obligation Met, Future Invested

For the Financial Year 2025, Trent Limited’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) obligation, as mandated by Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, stood at an impressive Rs 12.46 crore. This figure was calculated based on the company’s average net profit of Rs 622.86 crore. Trent actively spent Rs 4.75 crore on approved CSR projects during the year, which includes administrative overheads amounting to Rs 23 lakhs. Notably, a significant unspent committed amount of Rs 7.72 crore has been diligently transferred to a designated Unspent CSR Account. This substantial sum is earmarked for an ongoing school project in Vapi, Gujarat, a multi-year initiative approved for implementation through the newly incorporated Trent Foundation over a period of four years starting from FY 2024-25. This strategic allocation reflects Trent’s long-term vision for community development rather than a mere shortfall in spending, ensuring sustained and impactful change.

Nurturing Minds and Building Skills

Trent’s CSR initiatives are strategically aligned with national development priorities, focusing on key areas such as education, employability of youth through skills building, and training women in entrepreneurship. One of its flagship education programs, the ‘Trent Scholar’ initiative, in partnership with Karta Initiative India Foundation, provides crucial support to 5 scholars from highly marginalized backgrounds. These scholars receive opportunities to pursue higher education at premier universities, complemented by internships, mentorship, and pastoral care, aiming to develop them into role models for their communities. Furthermore, Trent champions women’s education through the ‘Nanhi Kali’ project, collaborating with K.C. Mahindra Education Trust. This project empowers 300 young girls from low-income families in Mumbai, Maharashtra, by supporting their formal schooling up to Grade 10 and equipping them with essential 21st-century skills for holistic development. The company also runs an Affirmative Action program that specifically impacts youth and women from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST).

Catalyzing Community-Led Growth

In the realm of entrepreneurship, Trent has launched impactful programs like the ‘Kaarigar Clinic,’ recognized as India’s first rural business clinic. This initiative empowers skilled craftswomen from Kutch, Gujarat, by providing them with business training, digital and design upskilling, and vital market linkages. The goal is to help these women establish and grow sustainable businesses, thereby enhancing social cohesion and improving livelihoods. Complementing this, the ‘Crafting a Better Planet’ initiative, through its innovative Plastic Bank, addresses environmental concerns while creating economic opportunities. Women are trained to collect plastic waste, which is then woven, upcycled, and curated into sustainable products for sale. This not only reduces waste but also facilitates the dissemination of environmental and social impact through women-led workshops in schools. Additionally, the ‘HOP Bear Initiative’ creatively transforms surplus kidswear fabric into handcrafted soft toys, sold at Westside stores, with each purchase contributing to mid-day meals for undernourished school children, blending circularity with social good.

Touching Lives, One Initiative at a Time

The tangible impact of Trent’s diverse CSR portfolio is evident in the lives it touches. In FY 2024-25, over 1,200 beneficiaries were directly impacted by the company’s community programs. This widespread reach is significantly bolstered by the enthusiastic participation of Trent’s employees in volunteering efforts, contributing over 77,000 hours towards societal good. The company also proudly served over 100 million customers, highlighting its widespread engagement beyond just transactions. Trent’s commitment extends to responsible supply chain practices, with over 90% of its product vendors undergoing SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audits) 4-pillar audits. These rigorous assessments cover crucial aspects like labor standards, health & safety, environmental standards, and business ethics, including human rights, ensuring that ethical conduct is upheld across its entire value chain.

Strategic Stewardship for Sustainable Impact

Trent’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability (CSR&S) Committee, comprising a mix of Non-Executive and Independent Directors including Chairman Noel N. Tata and Ms. Hema Ravichandar, provides strategic oversight to the company’s sustainability agenda. This committee held four meetings during FY 2024-25, ensuring that all initiatives are aligned with defined goals and targets. The company’s sustainability strategy is built on three core pillars: ‘Be Resource Efficient’ (focusing on energy conservation, renewable energy adoption, and effective waste management), ‘Be Responsible by Design’ (emphasizing sustainable sourcing and responsible materials), and ‘Be People Conscious’ (prioritizing employee well-being and community empowerment). This robust framework, which is periodically reviewed by the Board, guides Trent’s journey towards continued success, integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives as enshrined in the National Guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC). The establishment of Trent Foundation in October 2024 further solidifies the company’s long-term commitment to its diverse CSR activities, reflecting a proactive and structured approach to social investment.

As Trent Limited continues its ambitious growth, including expanding into international markets, its unwavering commitment to social responsibility remains a cornerstone of its operations.
