The Tata Trusts and IIM Bangalore have not disclosed the financial value of the grant.

BENGALURU (India CSR): The Tata Trusts have announced a landmark philanthropic commitment to the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) for the development of its new Undergraduate School in Bengaluru. The grant will support the institute’s long-term academic vision, campus infrastructure, research capability and roadmap for excellence in higher education.

Tata Trusts, one of India’s oldest and most influential philanthropic institutions, announced this week a significant increase in its charitable spending for the current fiscal year. The organization will raise its philanthropic outlay to Rs. 2,000 crore in FY26, compared to approximately Rs. 1,600 crore in the previous year.

The new School of Undergraduate Studies is located around 27 kilometres from IIMB’s main campus. It has been conceived as part of IIMB’s broader vision to contribute to undergraduate education in India with the same academic rigour and global outlook that define its postgraduate and executive education programmes.

Two Four-Year Residential Programmes to Begin in August

The school will initially offer two four-year, full-time residential undergraduate programmes. These include a BSc (Honours) in Economics with a minor in Data Science, and a BSc (Honours) in Data Science with a minor in Economics.

Both programmes will commence in August this year. The curriculum brings together data science, economics and business studies in an interdisciplinary framework. It aims to prepare students for a complex and data-intensive market environment.

The first cohort will have 80 students, with 40 students in each stream. The structure is designed to enable focused learning, personalised attention and strong academic mentorship within IIMB’s learning ecosystem.

Endowment to Build Academic and Residential Infrastructure

The Tata Trusts’ endowment will support the development of world-class academic and residential infrastructure for the undergraduate campus. It will also enable the creation of new research clusters at the intersection of emerging and important fields.

These areas include Artificial Intelligence, data science, algorithmic design, Indian Knowledge Systems and applied business learning. The support is also expected to strengthen IIMB’s commitment to building a dedicated faculty body drawn from diverse academic disciplines.

Investment in Knowledge and Nation Building

For the Tata Trusts, the commitment reflects a long-standing belief that enduring philanthropy lies in investing in knowledge and in people who carry it forward. The Trusts have supported institutions that are academically rigorous, globally oriented and closely connected with India’s development priorities.

An undergraduate programme designed around data, economics and evidence aligns with this tradition of institution-building and long-term social impact.

Philanthropic Capital Can Shape Institutions: Noel Tata

Speaking on the occasion, Noel Tata, Chairman, Tata Trusts, said, “The Tata Trusts have for over a century supported some of India’s most defining institutions like the Tata Memorial Hospital and the Indian Institute of Science. This support reflects the same instinct, to build institutions of enduring value through support at an early, formative stage when philanthropic capital can shape not just a building or a budget, but the character and ambition of an institution itself.”

Transformative Endowments Important for Global Leadership: Dr. Devi Shetty

Welcoming the endowment, Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairperson, Board of Governors, IIM Bangalore, said, “Transformative endowments, exemplified by the support from the Tata Trusts, are fundamental to setting institutes of national importance such as IIM Bangalore firmly on a path of global leadership. We are committed to nurturing talent at the undergraduate level and creating a pipeline of thinkers who can engage with the challenges of a data-driven world.”

Reflecting on the partnership, Siddharth Sharma, CEO, Tata Trusts, said, “At the Tata Trusts, we seek to nurture initiatives that are both ambitious in vision and grounded in realities they aim to address. Supporting IIM Bangalore, as it extends its tradition of academic rigour and excellence to undergraduate education, reflects our belief, that investing in knowledge and in the individuals who will shape India’s future, is among the most meaningful things we can do.”

Tata Trusts Aim to Support Ambitious and Grounded Initiatives

Reflecting on the partnership, Siddharth Sharma, CEO, Tata Trusts, said, “At the Tata Trusts, we seek to nurture initiatives that are both ambitious in vision and grounded in realities they aim to address. Supporting IIM Bangalore, as it extends its tradition of academic rigour and excellence to undergraduate education, reflects our belief, that investing in knowledge and in the individuals who will shape India’s future, is among the most meaningful things we can do.”

Programmes Designed to Build Evidence-Based Leadership

Elaborating on the academic design, Professor U Dinesh Kumar, Director-in-Charge, IIM Bangalore, said, “We have designed programmes that not only equip students with technical proficiencies, but enable young minds to ask better questions, interpret complexity and lead with evidence. The support from the Tata Trusts allows us to invest deeply in faculty, research infrastructure and campus environment, thereby contributing to a state-of-the-art learning ecosystem focused on India’s developmental priorities and committed to strengthening global capabilities.”

Strengthening India’s Higher Education Landscape

The grant marks a significant moment for Indian higher education. It brings together the institutional legacy of IIM Bangalore and the philanthropic vision of the Tata Trusts.

The undergraduate campus is expected to contribute to India’s need for future-ready talent in economics, data science, business and public systems. By combining rigorous academics with residential learning and research-led exposure, the school aims to create a new generation of thinkers, analysts and leaders.

The Tata Trusts

Established in 1892, the Tata Trusts are India’s oldest and among Asia’s largest philanthropic institutions. They have played a pioneering role in creating an enduring difference in the lives of communities by advancing equity, resilience and shared progress.

Inspired by the vision of Founder Jamsetji Tata and guided by a legacy of proactive philanthropy, the Tata Trusts work to catalyse systemic and sustainable change across diverse areas. These include healthcare, nutrition, education, water, sanitation and hygiene, urban and rural livelihoods, and other development priorities.

The Trusts build meaningful solutions by strengthening public systems, building institutions and supporting socio-economic development. Through collaborations, they nurture grassroots efforts, empower change makers and touch lives across India.
