Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality: This achievement sets a new benchmark in the industry and underscores HCCB’s role as a leader in corporate environmental responsibility.

NEW DELHI (India CSR): In a groundbreaking development for environmental sustainability, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverage Pvt Ltd (HCCB), a frontrunner in India’s FMCG sector, has recently announced a significant achievement. Its bottling plant located in the Bidadi Industrial Area, Ramanagara, Karnataka, has been officially certified as carbon neutral. This distinction makes it the first Coca-Cola bottling facility in both India and the Southwest Asia region to attain this milestone, adhering to the stringent international standard PAS 2060.

Carbon Neutrality Certification

The certification, which is scheduled to be formally issued to HCCB in May 2024, is endorsed by DNV, a globally recognized registrar and classification society. This achievement is not just a feather in the cap for HCCB but also marks a vital step in the company’s ongoing journey towards sustainability.

The certification aligns seamlessly with HCCB’s broader goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 and its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its entire value chain by 25% by the year 2030.

Sustainable Practices and Commitments

Since 2020, the Bidadi plant has made remarkable strides in reducing its carbon footprint. A significant part of this success can be attributed to the plant’s initiative of sourcing over 90% of its power from renewable energy sources.

This focus on energy efficiency is evident in HCCB’s efforts to optimize energy consumption for every litre of beverage produced, reflecting a deep commitment to environmental stewardship.

Furthermore, to tackle the residual emissions at the Bidadi facility, HCCB has laid out plans to invest in the Gold Standard certified carbon credits project in India, reinforcing its dedication to achieving carbon neutrality by 2024. The company’s commitment extends beyond just carbon neutrality; it encompasses a range of environmental initiatives. These include water replenishment projects, support for nature-based solutions, efforts to enhance biodiversity, and promoting regenerative agriculture practices in collaboration with local suppliers and farmers.

Environmental Sustainability

A Major Milestone in Sustainability

Alok Sharma, the Executive Director of Supply Chain at Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd (HCCB), expressed his pride and optimism regarding the company’s significant achievement of achieving carbon neutrality in its plant. He emphasized that this accomplishment is not only a major milestone for HCCB but also establishes new benchmarks for the entire industry. According to Mr. Sharma, this achievement serves as a tangible demonstration of HCCB’s commitment to a sustainable future.

Setting the Stage for a Greener Tomorrow

Sharma further stated that achieving carbon neutrality is just the beginning of a much larger journey. HCCB is actively setting the stage for a greener tomorrow, not just within its own operations but across its entire supply chain. The company is taking focused actions that are designed to lead to impactful environmental progress. This approach reflects a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of business operations and environmental stewardship.
Commitment to Carbon Emission Reduction

HCCB’s initiatives are in alignment with the Government of India’s vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

In 2021, The Coca-Cola Company made a significant environmental commitment by pledging to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% from its 2015 levels. This ambitious goal aims at achieving Net Zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, encompassing all of its global operations. This commitment is a reflection of the company’s dedication to environmental sustainability and its proactive approach to combat climate change.

Addressing Climate Change with Informed Actions

Enrique Ackermann, serving as the Vice President of Technical Innovation & Supply Chain for Coca-Cola India & Southwest Asia, has placed a strong emphasis on the need for informed and decisive actions in the battle against climate change. Ackermann stresses the importance of identifying and implementing sustainable solutions throughout the company’s value chain. This approach is not just about reducing the company’s carbon footprint but also about building resilience against climate-related challenges.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Future

Acknowledging the significance of the carbon neutrality certification achieved by Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd (HCCB), Ackermann views this accomplishment as a clear indication of the company’s steadfast commitment to sustainability. The certification is seen as a milestone, symbolizing the company’s dedication to achieving carbon neutrality and forging a path toward a more sustainable future.

Alignment with Governmental Goals and Sustainable Development

HCCB’s initiatives are in alignment with the Government of India’s vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. By aligning its goals with national priorities, HCCB not only adheres to governmental guidelines but also actively participates in the collective movement towards sustainable development and environmental conservation. This alignment showcases HCCB’s role in contributing to a broader, global effort to mitigate climate change and promote sustainability.

Through its actions, HCCB sets a precedent for other companies to follow, demonstrating that sustainable practices and business success can go hand in hand in the journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.
