NEW DELHI (India CSR): In a crucial move for press freedom, the Supreme Court of India has reaffirmed that journalists have the right to criticize government policies without fear of persecution. This significant ruling bolsters the fundamental right to free expression, which is critical for the media’s role in a democratic society.

Court Defends Media’s Role in Democracy

The court’s recent statement has sent a clear message to governments, particularly in states where journalists have faced harassment for reporting on controversial policies. In a case involving a journalist from Uttar Pradesh, the Supreme Court reiterated, “Criticism of government actions is not sedition but a necessary part of democracy.” This decision brings much-needed relief to journalists who have been silenced by political repression.

Rising Intolerance for Criticism

In many states, journalists have been subjected to intimidation, arrests, and even legal charges under strict laws for criticizing the government. This reflects an alarming trend of zero tolerance for dissent. The court acknowledged this growing issue, noting, “The aggressive stance of political leaders against criticism threatens the very fabric of a free society.”

Media as the Fourth Pillar of Democracy

The court emphasized the ethical responsibility of the media in holding the government accountable. “A free press is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy,” the judgment read, underscoring the media’s role as a check on power. Without this freedom, the integrity of the democratic process is compromised.

A Positive Step Forward

This ruling offers renewed hope for journalists across India, encouraging them to continue their vital work without fear of retaliation. It marks a significant step in safeguarding press freedom, ensuring that journalists can fulfill their duty to the public by shining a light on government actions.
