Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi (February 3, 1929 – November 14, 2023), affectionately known as “Biki,” was a visionary leader who transformed the Indian hospitality industry into a global force. As the Chairman Emeritus of The Oberoi Group, he steered the company’s expansion into a luxury hotel chain with a presence in over 20 countries. His dedication to excellence and his unwavering commitment to providing exceptional guest experiences earned him the esteemed title of “Hotelier of the Century” from Hotelier International.

Oberoi was born into the hospitality industry, as his father, Rai Bahadur M.S. Oberoi, founded the Oberoi Group in 1934. He grew up living in hotels and immersed himself in the world of hospitality from a young age. After completing his education in India, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, he gained a degree in hotel management from Lausanne, Switzerland.

Early Life and Education

Born in Delhi, India, on February 3, 1929, Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi inherited his passion for hospitality from his father, Rai Bahadur M.S. Oberoi, the founder of The Oberoi Group. He received his education at St. Paul’s School in Darjeeling and subsequently pursued a degree in hotel management from the esteemed Institute Glion in Switzerland.

Shaping the Hospitality Landscape

Oberoi joined the Oberoi Group in the 1950s and quickly rose through the ranks. He played a pivotal role in expanding the group’s presence both domestically and internationally. He was instrumental in opening several luxury hotels in key cities around the world, including New York, Dubai, and Mauritius.

Upon returning to India, Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi joined the family business, immersing himself in the intricacies of hotel operations. His astute business acumen and unwavering dedication to providing unparalleled service quickly propelled him to the forefront of the hospitality industry. In 1965, he assumed the reins of The Oberoi Group as its Chairman, marking the beginning of an era of unprecedented growth and innovation.

Oberoi was known for his unwavering commitment to providing exceptional service and creating unique guest experiences. He believed that people were the most valuable asset of any organization and invested heavily in employee training and development. He established The Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development in 1967, which continues to be a leading hospitality training institute in India.
