Fashion moves quickly. Trends emerge, evolve, and disappear within months. Yet when it comes to Indian weddings and celebrations, some things remain remarkably consistent.

Customers still want craftsmanship. Families still value personal relationships. And when a garment is being chosen for one of life’s most important occasions, trust can matter as much as design.

For Prem Prakash Taneja, third-generation entrepreneur and part of the family behind Pratapsons Jaipur, these principles have remained central to the business while the way customers shop for occasion wear has changed considerably.

Founded in 1954, Pratapsons has grown from its Jaipur roots into a destination for designer sarees, bridal lehengas, couture and celebration wear. Its journey reflects a broader challenge facing India’s traditional fashion businesses: how to embrace changing consumer expectations without losing the craftsmanship and relationships that created their reputation.

The Changing Indian Occasion-Wear Customer

The modern customer has more choices than ever.

A bride can discover designers through Instagram, compare collections online, speak to friends through WhatsApp and research a brand before ever entering a showroom. Geography is also becoming less restrictive as digital discovery allows customers to encounter brands beyond their immediate neighbourhood.

But greater choice has not necessarily reduced the importance of physical retail.

For high-value occasion wear, customers often want to see the fabric, understand the craftsmanship and assess the finishing before making a decision. They may also want advice on styling, colours and suitability for a particular ceremony.

That makes the experience surrounding the product particularly important.

For Taneja, this is where a heritage retailer can continue to differentiate itself.

Technology may change how customers discover a brand, but trust still influences why they finally choose one.

Craftsmanship Cannot Be Reduced to a Trend

Indian ethnic fashion has experienced significant changes in recent years. Traditional silhouettes are being reinterpreted, younger consumers are experimenting with styling, and contemporary influences are increasingly finding their way into wedding wardrobes.

Yet craftsmanship remains at the centre of the category.

A saree, lehenga or couture piece is ultimately judged not only by how it appears in a photograph but also by the details that become visible when it is worn: the fabric, embroidery, finishing, construction and overall feel.

This is particularly important for bridal and occasion wear, where customers are often purchasing pieces associated with memories that can last for decades.

Pratapsons’ positioning reflects this balance: retaining its connection with traditional Indian aesthetics while offering collections designed for contemporary occasions and preferences.

For a business with roots going back to 1954, evolution is therefore not about chasing every trend. It is about understanding which changes will remain relevant to the customer.

Why Personal Relationships Still Matter

The rise of digital commerce has made convenience an expectation. But convenience does not eliminate the need for human judgement.

A customer selecting a bridal outfit may have a very different requirement from someone purchasing everyday clothing. Family opinions can influence the decision. The event itself may determine the design. The customer may need help understanding what works with jewellery, accessories, or the overall occasion.

That is where experience becomes valuable.

A retailer that has spent decades serving customers can accumulate a form of institutional knowledge that cannot easily be replicated by an online catalogue.

For Pratapsons Jaipur, relationships built over generations remain part of that experience.

The customer may be new, but the business understands that the purchase is rarely just about the garment.

It is about the occasion.

What the Next Generation Must Understand

For Taneja, being part of the third generation means navigating a delicate balance.

The previous generations built the foundation. The current generation has to make that foundation relevant to a new audience.

That requires listening closely to changing preferences without abandoning the principles that established the brand.

Quality cannot become secondary to speed.

Craftsmanship cannot become secondary to visibility.

And customer relationships cannot become secondary to convenience.

Instead, each needs to work alongside the others.

This philosophy is increasingly relevant beyond fashion. Across India’s family-run businesses, younger generations are inheriting brands with significant histories while entering markets shaped by digital discovery, faster communication and increasingly informed consumers.

Their task is not simply to modernise.

It is to modernise with judgment.

A Future Built on Continuity

Pratapsons Jaipur’s story offers one perspective on what that can look like.

The brand continues to operate within a category deeply rooted in Indian culture while responding to customers whose expectations have changed significantly since its early years.

For Prem Prakash Taneja, the opportunity lies in keeping those two realities connected.

The future of Indian occasion wear may be more digital, more personalised and more diverse than ever before. But the fundamentals behind a meaningful purchase are unlikely to disappear.

People will still want beautiful craftsmanship.

They will still want confidence in what they are buying.

And for important occasions, they will still value someone who understands that the right outfit is not simply something to wear.

It becomes part of the memory.

That is the space Pratapsons Jaipur continues to occupy, bringing together heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary occasion wear while carrying forward a relationship with customers that began more than seven decades ago.
