New Airport Terminal, Highways, and Power Infrastructure Set to Transform Southern Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI (India CSR): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Tuticorin to unveil a series of transformative infrastructure projects worth over Rs 4,800 crore. These initiatives, spanning aviation, highways, ports, railways, and energy, aim to elevate Tamil Nadu’s connectivity, economic potential, and sustainability. From a state-of-the-art airport terminal to enhanced port facilities, this ambitious rollout promises to reshape the region’s future, fostering trade, tourism, and clean energy access.

A New Era for Tuticorin Airport

A centerpiece of Modi’s visit is the inauguration of the new terminal at Tuticorin Airport, built at a cost of approximately ₹450 crore. Spanning 17,340 square meters, this modern facility is designed to handle 1,350 passengers during peak hours and up to 20 lakh annually, with plans for future expansion to accommodate 25 lakh passengers per year. Equipped with 100% LED lighting, energy-efficient systems, and an on-site sewage treatment plant for water recycling, the terminal has earned a GRIHA-4 sustainability rating. Local business leaders, including Ponヴェンカテシュ from the Indian Chamber of Commerce, have hailed the terminal as a game-changer for boosting exports and tourism in southern Tamil Nadu.

Highway Upgrades to Drive Connectivity

Two major highway projects will be dedicated to the nation, enhancing Tamil Nadu’s road network. The first is the four-laning of the 50 km Sethiyathope–Cholapuram stretch of NH-36, developed under the Vikravandi–Thanjavur corridor at a cost of over ₹2,350 crore. Featuring three bypasses, a 1-km bridge over the Kollidam River, four major bridges, and seven flyovers, this project is expected to reduce travel time by approximately 45 minutes, connecting cultural and agricultural hubs in the Delta region. The second project, the six-laning of the 5.16 km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, built for ₹200 crore, includes underpasses and bridges to streamline cargo movement and support industrial growth around V.O. Chidambaranar Port.

Boosting Port Efficiency with North Cargo Berth-III

To strengthen Tamil Nadu’s maritime capabilities, Modi will inaugurate North Cargo Berth-III at V.O. Chidambaranar Port, constructed at a cost of ₹285 crore. With a cargo handling capacity of 6.96 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), this berth will enhance the port’s ability to manage dry bulk cargo, improving efficiency and reducing logistics costs. Industry experts, including Dharmaraj, President of Tudisia, note that this upgrade will significantly boost trade activities, positioning Tuticorin as a key hub for port-led economic growth in 2025.

Railway Modernization for Sustainable Travel

Three railway infrastructure projects in southern Tamil Nadu will be dedicated to the nation, focusing on sustainability and connectivity. The electrification of the 90 km Madurai–Bodinayakkanur line will promote eco-friendly rail travel, supporting tourism and commuting in the Madurai and Theni regions. Additionally, the doubling of the 21 km Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari section and the Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil Junction (12.87 km) and Tirunelveli–Melappalayam (3.6 km) sections, collectively worth over ₹650 crore, will enhance rail capacity and efficiency. These upgrades are set to improve freight and passenger movement, contributing to economic development across the state.

Powering Tamil Nadu with Clean Energy

A significant step toward sustainable energy, Modi will lay the foundation stone for the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) to evacuate power from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 (2×1000 MW). This ₹550 crore project, executed by PowerGrid Corporation, includes a 400 kV quad double-circuit transmission line from Kudankulam to the Tuticorin-II GIS substation. This infrastructure will strengthen the national grid, ensuring reliable clean energy distribution to meet Tamil Nadu’s growing power demands and supporting neighboring states.

Celebrating Tamil Nadu’s Heritage

On July 27, Modi will participate in the Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple in Tiruchirappalli, commemorating the 1,000th anniversary of Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I’s naval expedition. During the event, he will release a commemorative coin honoring the emperor’s legacy, blending cultural celebration with the region’s development narrative. This gesture underscores the government’s commitment to preserving Tamil Nadu’s rich heritage while driving modern progress.

A Vision for Tamil Nadu’s Future

Modi’s visit to Tuticorin marks a pivotal moment for Tamil Nadu, with projects designed to enhance connectivity, boost industrial growth, and promote sustainable development. From cutting-edge aviation infrastructure to eco-friendly rail and energy systems, these initiatives reflect a holistic approach to regional progress. Local stakeholders anticipate a surge in trade, tourism, and employment opportunities, cementing Tuticorin’s role as a key economic hub in southern India.
