Painting your home or office contributes a lot to the aesthetic appearance. It is not just the structural appearance, painting your place can make it visually appealing. Choosing the right colors for painting can make it more attractive. However, there are certain myths about painting that can put a lot of impact on the time, money, and life of the paint.

The following are some of the myths debunked for your knowledge.

  • Paint can be applied on any surface: Paint is not just a color to apply anywhere. There are different kinds of paints based on application. Three factors play important role in selecting the right kind of paint. Whether it is a repairing work or new paintwork? Are we painting inside or outside? Is the surface is plain or textures? These three factors can make a lot of difference while selecting paint.
  • All imperfections can be covered with putty: A wall care putty can be used only to cover minor imperfections or hairline cracks. But for larger gaps or holes in a wall, applying putty may not be a solution. Consulting for expert structural engineer’s opinion might give you the right solution to address the problem.
  • Primer is enough and a topcoat not required: The purpose of primer is to protect the wall and serves as a base for the topcoat to stick to the surface properly. The topcoat is made to withstand wear and tear and only primer coat cannot handle it. A topcoat on a primer together can make the paint job long-lasting.
  • Soaking paintbrushes in thinner can remove paint residue: The paintbrushes are made of plastic fibers. Soaking them in a thinner for a long time can melt and make the bristles hard. After painting, the brushes need to be washed in thinner and dry them right away. This could help the brushes to be in good condition for the next job.
  • Water-based paints cannot be used on outside walls: It is a myth that water-based paints dissolve in water. Water-based paints are durable and not affected by water once they are dried. This quality makes them a good choice for outside walls.
  • Wall paints can be applied to the floors: Wall paints and floor paints are not the same. Floors are subjected to more wear and tear. Using wall paint to paint floors does not work. Wall paints cannot withstand high wear and tear as floor paints do. However, we can use floor paints to paint the walls.
  • A professional is needed for painting: A painting job may not always require professionals. Anybody who knows paintwork can do the job. However, an experienced professional can do a clean and precise finish painting by covering hard floors, switchboards, wooden doors, etc.
  • Any thinner can be mixed with any kind of paint: All types of thinners are colorless but they are not the same. Each type of paint requires a specific thinner. For example, acrylic paint requires acrylic paint thinner, lacquer paint requires lacquer thinner, etc.
