BENGALURU (India CSR): The National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) has unveiled a groundbreaking publication titled ‘Online Gaming in India: Technology, Policy, and Challenges.’ Edited by eminent scholars Prof. Dr. Shameek Sen and Prof. Dr. Lovely Dasgupta, this book provides an in-depth analysis of India’s burgeoning online gaming industry. Covering topics from technological innovations to regulatory frameworks, it is the first comprehensive book to address the multifaceted dimensions of this evolving sector.

Key Features of the Book
The book serves as an essential resource for professionals, academics, and enthusiasts in law, technology, and related fields. Published by Chapman & Hall, UK, and available through Routledge’s platform for scholarly works, the book delves into:

  • The role of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, Web3, and the metaverse in online gaming.
  • Comparative analyses of global and Indian regulatory frameworks.
  • Insights into the rapidly expanding fantasy gaming sector.

Carefully curated chapters bring together contributions from leading legal experts, scholars, and researchers, offering nuanced perspectives on opportunities and challenges shaping the online gaming industry.

The Launch Event
The launch event, organized by NUJS’s Centre for Technology, Entertainment, and Sports Law (CTESL), featured a panel discussion on the socio-economic impact of the online gaming industry in India. Distinguished personalities graced the occasion, including:

  • Justice Vikramjit Sen, retired Supreme Court Judge and former Chairman of the Bombay Stock Exchange.
  • Justice Sanjib Banerjee, retired Chief Justice of the Madras and Meghalaya High Courts.
  • Vikramjit Banerjee, Additional Solicitor General of India.
  • Y.K. Sinha, Former Chief Information Commissioner of India.
  • Dr. Yatan Pal Singh Balhara, Professor of Psychiatry at AIIMS, New Delhi.
  • Amrit Kiran Singh, Founder President of the Skill Online Games Institute.
  • Sudipta Bhattacharjee, Partner at Khaitan & Co.
  • Arjya B Majumdar, Professor at Jindal Global Law School.
  • Jay Sayta, Technology and Gaming Lawyer.

Perspectives from the Event

Justice Vikramjit Sen’s Views

Justice Vikramjit Sen lauded the book for its meticulous research and relevance, stating,

Book Launch Ceremony

“The industry is tasked with developing new technologies and driving growth in gaming, which has immense potential and promise. Each chapter is well-researched, addressing specific aspects of gaming in India, allowing readers to draw their own conclusions. The beautifully printed and thoughtfully compiled book is a go-to resource for anyone with an interest in the industry. Congratulations to all involved.”

Mr. Amrit Kiran Singh’s Insights

Mr. Singh emphasized the economic potential of the gaming industry, remarking,

“This nascent industry holds mammoth potential for boosting the Indian economy. The book, alongside the ‘Skill-Chance Framework’ developed by Dr. Bimal Roy of the Indian Statistical Institute, equips regulators with data and tools to create better regulations. Fragmenting the online gaming industry into categories such as E-Sports, Video Games, and Real Money Games would harm the ease of doing business. This book and framework will guide policymakers in regulating the sector effectively.”

The Importance of Regulation in Online Gaming
The book addresses critical challenges, including:

  • Ensuring balanced regulations that do not stifle innovation.
  • Protecting players from the pitfalls of unregulated platforms.
  • Leveraging gaming as a tool for socio-economic development.

A Step Towards Industry Growth
By offering insights into the challenges and opportunities of online gaming in India, the book highlights how the sector can be a significant contributor to India’s economy. It serves as a critical resource for policymakers, businesses, and academics to foster sustainable growth and innovation in this field.

‘Online Gaming in India: Technology, Policy, and Challenges’ marks a significant step in understanding and addressing the complexities of a rapidly growing industry. With contributions from renowned experts and a clear focus on emerging technologies and regulations, the book promises to be an invaluable resource for anyone looking to navigate the dynamic world of online gaming in India.
