NEW DELHI (India CSR): On the occasion of Van Mahotsav 2024, NIIT University (NU) presented its Sustainability Impact Report 2024, highlighting its extensive efforts to nurture the Aravalli range surrounding its Neemrana campus. Established in 2009, NU’s green campus has significantly contributed to environmental sustainability through various initiatives.
Key Highlights
Greening the Aravalli Range
NU has planted over 1 lakh trees, significantly enhancing the green cover of the Aravalli hills. This initiative is part of the university’s long-term commitment to environmental restoration.
Innovative Water Management Projects
The university has implemented water conservation measures, including 15 check dams and 5 water harvesting recharge pits, which have arrested the depletion of the water table by 6 meters. Additionally, wastewater is recycled and reused for afforestation, ensuring no external water is sourced for the campus.
Collaborative Efforts for Biodiversity
In collaboration with renowned environmentalist Pradip Krishen, NU launched Project Krishna Leela to restore native vegetation on the eastern side of the rocky Aravalli. The project has shown remarkable success, with 90% of the planted trees surviving.
Microclimate and Air Quality Improvements
The concerted sustainability initiatives have created a microclimate around the campus that is 2 degrees cooler and has 50% better air quality index (AQI) compared to surrounding areas.
Sabi River Revival Project
NU has spearheaded the revival of the Sabi River, engaging communities across 57 villages. The initiative has shown partial success, with evidence of improved pondage at Masani Barrage.
Statements from Key Figures
Major General AK Singh (Retd), Dean – Student Affairs & Chief Operations Officer, NU, stated, “Our green initiatives reflect our unwavering dedication to environmental resurrection and sustainability. By reviving the Aravalli hills and implementing innovative water conservation strategies, we are setting a standard for sustainable practices.”
Environmental expert Pradip Krishen commented on Project Krishna Leela, “Since March 2022, we’ve conducted vegetation surveys, collected seeds, and set up a nursery. Our efforts are paving the way for the restoration of the Aravalli landscape.”
Student Tanya Verma shared her experience, “Working on Project Krishna Leela has been enlightening. I’ve learned about different seeds and observed nature closely, which has been a rewarding experience.”
NIIT University’s initiatives underscore its commitment to integrating academic learning with environmental stewardship, fostering a greener future, and enhancing the quality of life for local communities around the Aravalli region.
