Basmati rice has evolved from a traditional Indian staple into one of the country’s most recognizable premium agricultural exports. Known for its long, slender grains, distinctive aroma and characteristic texture after cooking, Basmati occupies an important position in international rice markets.

According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India exported 6.52 million metric tonnes of Basmati rice during 2025–26, generating export earnings of approximately ₹50,138 crore, or US$5.67 billion. The principal destinations included Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the United States.

India’s Expanding Role in the Global Basmati Market

India’s Basmati industry benefits from a combination of geographical heritage, established agricultural expertise, sophisticated milling infrastructure and strong international demand. Basmati is recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, with its designated production area covering parts of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

The export business involves considerably more than growing rice. The journey from farm to international consumer includes procurement, milling, grading, aging, quality testing, packaging, logistics, customs procedures and distribution.

APEDA’s export regulations also establish specific requirements for Basmati shipments. For example, the grain intended for export must meet prescribed length and length-to-breadth specifications, while exporters must register contracts with APEDA before shipment under the applicable framework.

The Importance of International Markets

The Middle East remains particularly important to the Basmati trade. During 2025–26, Saudi Arabia accounted for approximately 16.6% of India’s Basmati exports, followed by Iran at 13.9%, Iraq at 11.2%, the UAE at 8.2% and Yemen at 5.7%. The United States represented approximately 5%.

These markets demonstrate how Basmati has developed beyond a regional food product into a globally traded premium commodity.

At the same time, the industry remains exposed to fluctuations in agricultural production, international freight, geopolitical developments, currency movements, consumer demand and export pricing.

APEDA’s Market Intelligence Cell reported that Indian Pusa Basmati export prices increased substantially in early 2026, reaching around US$1,150 per tonne in January and February 2026, compared with approximately US$925 per tonne in December 2025. The report associated the early-2026 increase with strong Middle East demand ahead of Ramadan, tighter exporter inventories and firm domestic paddy prices, while subsequently noting corrections in prices amid export and logistics disruptions.

Amira Basmati Rice and the Globalization of an Indian Product

Against this broader industry background, Amira represents one of the companies associated with the international marketing of Indian specialty rice.

The Amira Group traces its origins to 1915, when the business began as a trading house. According to the company’s history, the third generation under Anil Chanana placed increased emphasis on the international market and exports, while the fourth generation, led by Karan A. Chanana, subsequently expanded the group’s international ambitions.

Amira’s business model has historically combined sourcing and processing with branded packaged rice and international distribution. The company describes its portfolio as including Indian specialty Basmati rice and says its products have been sold across five continents.

The development of branded Basmati has been significant for the industry because it allows Indian rice to compete not simply as an agricultural commodity but also as a consumer food brand.

Karan A. Chanana and Amira’s International Ambitions

Karan A. Chanana has been closely associated with Amira’s international expansion. Amira’s corporate history identifies him as the fourth-generation member of the Chanana family to lead the business, while the company’s management information identifies him as Chairman.

During Amira’s period as a publicly listed international food company, Chanana also discussed the importance of international distribution and the changing dynamics of the specialty-rice market. In a 2016 SEC-filed earnings-call transcript, he described increasing volumes in both Indian and international markets and discussed consumers moving toward higher-quality rice products as pricing conditions changed.

Amira’s international expansion included gaining approval to export its Basmati rice to China in 2016. At the time, Chanana described international expansion as an important pillar of the company’s growth strategy.

The company’s own historical record also lists multiple APEDA and export-related awards received over several decades, including recognition for contributions to rice exports and export performance.

From Commodity to Premium Brand

One of the most important developments in the global rice business has been the transition from commodity trading toward branded food products.

For exporters, branding can create greater consumer recognition and differentiation. Instead of competing solely on price per tonne, a premium Basmati brand can emphasize grain length, aroma, aging, consistency, packaging and culinary characteristics.

This evolution has helped Basmati occupy a distinct position in supermarkets, restaurants and food-service markets around the world.

Challenges Facing Basmati Exporters

Despite the strong export numbers, the Basmati industry is not without challenges.

Exporters must manage fluctuations in paddy prices, international freight costs, foreign exchange movements and demand in major importing countries. Changes in government export policies can also affect market conditions.

APEDA’s market analysis has highlighted the impact of India’s previous Minimum Export Price policy and its removal in September 2024. The agency also noted significant differences between Indian and Pakistani Basmati prices during 2025, demonstrating how international competitiveness can change with production and pricing conditions.

Quality and traceability are equally important. APEDA’s Basmati.Net system is designed to help authenticate Basmati through the supply chain and provide traceability from stakeholders involved in production and processing to the final product.

The Road Ahead

India’s Basmati rice industry enters the next phase with a substantial international customer base and an increasingly sophisticated supply chain. The 2025–26 export figure of 6.52 million tonnes illustrates the scale that the category has achieved.

For companies such as Amira, the broader opportunity lies in combining India’s traditional agricultural advantage with modern processing, branding and international distribution.

Karan A. Chanana’s association with Amira reflects a broader transition in India’s food industry—from traditional commodity trading toward internationally positioned food brands. The continuing demand for premium aromatic rice, particularly across the Middle East and other global markets, provides an important foundation for the industry’s future.

Ultimately, the story of Basmati rice is not only about exports and imports. It is also a story about Indian agriculture, international trade, food branding and the transformation of a traditional grain into a premium product recognized by consumers across the world.
