Enhances India’s Green Cover by planting more than 260,000 saplings with 700 new saplings planted during Van Mahotsav celebrations

MUMBAI: We live in an era where we are experiencing firsthand, the effects of climate change. Not only it has caused a shift in the Earth’s weather patterns and the average temperature, it has affected the people and their communities. Increased carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has now led to global warming.

As one of India’s top 10 Cement producers, JSW Cement has taken it upon itself to combat climate change, incorporating sustainability as a fundamental element in all its operations and decision making.

JSW Cement is committed to reduce its carbon footprint and bring about an enduring balance in the environment.

The Green Cement (PSC) manufacturing process of JSW reduces greenhouse emissions by more than 60% in comparison to its peers due to its product mix comprising of more Slag blended cement. Pioneering Green Cement in India, JSW Cement stands as a fitting example of corporate responsibility in challenges arising out of climate change.

During the last two years, JSW Cement has planted more than 260,000 saplings across all its manufacturing locations. The company further planted 700 new saplings during the recently concluded Van Mahotsav Week across its units.

The sapling plantation drive was organized in early July this year across Dolvi in Maharashtra, Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, Bellary in Karnataka, Salboni in West Bengal, Shiva Cement and Jajpur in Odisha. With the recent drive, all the teams across these manufacturing units took a pledge to work towards a more sustainable future.

Commenting on the occasion Nilesh Narwekar, CEO of JSW Cement, said “Our team is extremely driven to help restore the glory of our planet. We have undertaken a number of initiatives including use of industrial slag to make cement, sustainable manufacturing operations and initiatives to promote circular economy as part of our Green Commitment. The plantation drive undertaken during Van Mahotsav was a part of our commitment to increase the green cover at our plant locations. JSW Cement has always been on the forefront on taking proactive action towards Climate change and we are determined to further accelerate our efforts in this direction.”

JSW Cement has pledged to three business campaigns, #RE100, #EV100, and #EP100, under its commitment to build a sustainable future.

Under RE100, the company is committed to 100% renewable electricity usage across its entire global operations by 2050

Under EV100, the company is committed to electrify 100% of its fleet used for employee transportation by 2030

Under EP100, the company is committed to double the energy productivity by 2037-38 compared to a 2013-14 baseline

JSW Cement Ltd is part of US$13 billion JSW Group, an Indian conglomerate with interests in energy, infrastructure, cement, paints, sports and venture capital. JSW entered the cement market in 2009 with a vision to ensure a sustainable future for the country by producing eco-friendly cement, using industrial by-products such as Blast Furnace Slag.

Its manufacturing units at Vijayanagar in Karnataka, Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, Salboni in West Bengal, Jajpur in Odisha and Dolvi in Maharashtra utilize Slag from Steel manufacturing units to produce Portland Slag Cement and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS). Through its innovative conversion of industrial by-product into a useful end-product, JSW Cement helps reduce its carbon footprint.
