India’s First Government AI-Powered Lazy Eye Clinic Opens in Mumbai

In a landmark move for Maharashtra’s public health, the 180-year-old Sir J.J. Hospital partners with Bynocs to bring world-class, game-based vision therapy to every child and adult — inside the government system.

MUMBAI: What if your child’s blurry vision, frequent headaches or that one eye that quietly “drifts” could be corrected — not with surgery, but with a few minutes of a clinically designed video game at home? For thousands of families across Mumbai and Maharashtra, that future just arrived.

The Department of Ophthalmology, Sir J.J. Hospital, in collaboration with Bynocs, a globally recognized innovator in AI-powered digital therapeutics for binocular vision disorders, has inaugurated an Advanced Amblyopia & Binocular Vision Clinic. With it, Sir J.J. Hospital becomes the first government healthcare institution in India to offer a dedicated, AI-powered vision therapy service for the treatment of amblyopia (lazy eye) and binocular vision disorders, placing cutting-edge care within reach of every patient, regardless of income.

The clinic was inaugurated in the presence of Prof. Dr. Sanjay Surase, Medical Superintendent, and Prof. Dr. Sujata Chahande, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, along with distinguished faculty, ophthalmologists, optometrists and healthcare professionals. Prof. Dr. Ajay Bhandarwar, Dean, Grant Government Medical College and Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, conveyed his best wishes and congratulated the department on this landmark initiative.

A silent epidemic, hiding in plain sight

Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, affects an estimated 3–5% of the population and remains the leading cause of preventable visual impairment among children. If left untreated, it can result in lifelong vision loss, quietly limiting a child’s education, career and quality of life.

Intermittent squint (intermittent strabismus) is another widespread binocular vision disorder affecting both children and adults. Patients may experience intermittent double vision, headaches, eye strain, reduced depth perception, difficulty focusing and unstable eye alignment, symptoms that quietly erode daily performance at school, at work and behind the wheel. For generations, families were told that treatment was only possible in early childhood. That belief is now being rewritten.

Therapy that feels like play, backed by science

The newly established clinic combines the clinical expertise of Sir J.J. Hospital with Bynocs’ advanced AI-driven digital therapeutics. The platform uses engaging, game-based binocular vision therapy that is home-based, patient-friendly and clinically validated. Built on the dichoptic principle and the science of neuroplasticity, these programs are designed to strengthen binocular vision in patients with amblyopia and intermittent squint across a wide range of ages, including older children and adults once considered “too late” to treat.

Voices from the launch

“Sir J.J. Hospital has always been at the forefront of adopting innovations that improve patient care and expand access to advanced healthcare technologies. With the Bynocs centre, we are introducing one of the most innovative and clinically effective therapeutic platforms available today. This initiative further strengthens our vision of making advanced ophthalmic care accessible to all sections of society.”

— Prof. Dr. Ajay Bhandarwar, Dean, Grant Government Medical College & Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals

“The launch of this clinic represents a significant advancement in pediatric ophthalmology and binocular vision care. By combining expert clinical management with innovative digital therapeutics such as Bynocs, we can provide effective and accessible treatment options for patients suffering from amblyopia and other binocular vision disorders. This reflects our commitment to bringing cutting-edge healthcare technologies to patients through the public healthcare system.”

— Prof. Dr. Sanjay Surase, Medical Superintendent, Sir J.J. Hospital

“Traditionally, treatment opportunities were largely limited to childhood. Today, advances in neuroplasticity-based digital therapies have opened new possibilities even for older children and adults. Establishing this AI-powered vision therapy clinic within a government healthcare institution is a landmark achievement that will improve access to advanced care and bring hope to millions of patients across the country.”

— Prof. Dr. Sujata Chahande, HOD Ophthalmology, Sir J.J. Hospital & President, ISMSICS Maharashtra Chapter

Closing the gap between innovation and access

The clinic aims to bridge the gap between advanced vision therapy and public healthcare accessibility. Through AI-powered assessment, personalised therapy plans, remote monitoring and clinician-guided treatment pathways, patients can now access modern binocular vision rehabilitation within one of India’s premier government medical institutions. It is a major step forward in integrating digital therapeutics into mainstream ophthalmic care and a powerful signal of how artificial intelligence can improve patient outcomes at scale.

About Bynocs

Bynocs is a global leader in AI-powered digital therapeutics for binocular vision disorders, offering clinically guided treatment programs for amblyopia, intermittent squint, convergence insufficiency, accommodative dysfunctions and digital eye strain. Its proprietary, patent-protected technology is recognised for innovation by the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and the Brandon Hall Group.

Today, Bynocs is trusted by clinicians in more than 2,200 clinics globally, with over 33,000 patients enrolled across multiple countries — redefining the future of binocular vision care by making advanced treatment more accessible, engaging and effective for patients of all ages.
