MUMBAI: IKEA, a leading multichannel Swedish home furnishing retailer had announced the IKEA Better Living Challenge 2021, to celebrate small sustainable changes in our everyday lives that can make a big difference to the home and the world.

The challenge was aimed to enable the many Indians to live a more sustainable life at home, by following simple and everyday solutions that can help make a huge difference. The app shows how much energy, carbon, and water you are saving in real time and shows you easy ideas to lead an environment friendly life.

IKEA’s announcement aligns with Earth day. On this day, over millions of people take up actions to change behavior and create positive movement to conserve and protect the home we share.  The company reiterated their overall goals of becoming 100% climate positive by 2030 and Inspiring and enabling one billion people to live sustainably.

In the run up to Earth Day 2021, in India, the challenge helped save 4,57,000 kgs of (CO2) carbon footprint, which equals average consumption of diesel by 272,985 cars in a day in India.

The app also supported to conserve 8 million liters of water, equivalent to drinking water requirement of 1,142,858 people in India. The challenge helped waste segregation of 7,000 kgs, equivalent to average daily waste generated in 8750 households of Indian Metro cities.

“We are very happy to see the impact we were able to create together through the second season of IKEA Better Living Challenge. The success shows that together we can create a larger impact just by tracking the smallest of climate positive actions around us. The actions performed on the app are possible while we continue to stay at home, which is even more relevant in the current scenario. 2021 being the Leap year of sustainability for IKEA, we will continue to enable and inspire more people to live a more sustainable life at home.” says, Preet Dhupar, Chief Financial Officer and Sustainability Lead, IKEA India.

After a huge success of first season of the challenge in 2020, the company had announced the second season of the Better Living Challenge 2021 on 11th March- a gamified process that converts sustainability tips into actions that customers can log in the app when they do the same in real-life.  IKEA vouchers will be given to top 100 winners. Top 5 winners can get vouchers as much as INR 10,000 per person. Offers range from INR 1,000-10,000. The challenge was for a period of four weeks with 6000 active users.
