IAS officer Amit Kataria, known for his high-profile decisions and unique approach to governance, has recently captured public attention once again—not for his administrative actions, but for his significant wealth. Regarded as one of India’s wealthiest IAS officers, Kataria once made headlines for choosing to take a symbolic salary of just ₹1. With an estimated net worth of nearly ₹9 crore, his journey and background have sparked curiosity nationwide.

An Unconventional Start: Taking ₹1 as Salary

Early in his career, Amit Kataria, known for his innovative approaches, made an unusual decision to take only ₹1 as his salary from the government. This gesture garnered significant attention and highlighted his dedication to public service over personal gain. Media reports indicate that his wealth isn’t solely derived from his government salary but stems largely from family assets, particularly in real estate.

Who is Amit Kataria?

Amit Kataria is a 2004-batch IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre. Born and raised in Gurugram, Kataria attended Delhi Public School for his early education and later pursued B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi. In 2003, he cracked the UPSC Civil Services Examination, securing an impressive rank of 18. Over the years, Kataria has held prominent positions such as District Collector and Joint Secretary, contributing to his reputation as an effective and well-regarded administrator.

The Source of His Wealth: Family Real Estate Holdings

While Kataria’s government salary alone doesn’t account for his considerable wealth, his family’s real estate investments do. According to reports, his family holds substantial assets in the Delhi NCR region, which have added significantly to his net worth. Despite his high-profile public role, these private assets have quietly positioned him as one of the wealthiest civil servants in the country.

The Sunglasses Controversy

In 2015, Kataria found himself embroiled in a controversy when he wore sunglasses during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi while serving as the District Collector of Bastar, Chhattisgarh. This seemingly minor act drew widespread media attention, with some viewing it as a breach of official decorum. The incident led the Chhattisgarh government to issue a formal notice to him, sparking a debate over protocol versus personal style in public service.

Back to His Roots: Return to Chhattisgarh

After serving on Central deputation, Kataria recently returned to his home cadre in Chhattisgarh. His comeback has renewed interest in his career, with many anticipating the unique approaches he might bring to his role. Known for making bold choices, Kataria’s career is one marked by a blend of innovation and dedication, and his return to Chhattisgarh is expected to positively impact the region’s governance.

A Story of Dedication and Success

Amit Kataria’s journey reflects the intersection of public service and personal legacy. From symbolically choosing ₹1 as his salary to managing his family’s extensive real estate assets, his story is a mix of professional commitment and personal success. As he continues his work in Chhattisgarh, his career remains a testament to the diverse backgrounds and unique paths that civil servants in India often embody.
