Essar Patriarch Shashikant Ruia Passes Away at 81: A Visionary Leader and Philanthropist

MUMBAI (India CSR): In a moment of great sorrow, the Ruia and Essar Family announced the passing of Shri Shashikant Ruia, patriarch of the Ruia family and founder of the Essar Group, at the age of 81. Shri Shashikant Ruia, an iconic figure in Indian industry and a pillar of the corporate landscape, leaves behind a remarkable legacy of business achievements, community upliftment, and personal warmth.

1. A Legacy of Corporate Excellence

Shri Shashikant Ruia was instrumental in building the Essar Group from a modest beginning into a global conglomerate. His journey was marked by an unyielding passion for growth, innovation, and nation-building. With a vision to redefine India’s corporate landscape, he diversified Essar into sectors like steel, energy, infrastructure, and shipping, putting India on the global map. Born in Rajasthan in 1943, Shashi Ruia came from a family with a strong entrepreneurial tradition. He pursued his education in mechanical engineering at the College of Engineering, Guindy, in Chennai.

A visionary businessman, Ruia transformed a small trading enterprise into a global conglomerate. He played a key role in building the Essar Group into a diversified powerhouse spanning energy, steel, ports, telecommunications, and infrastructure. Alongside his brother Ravi, he began his entrepreneurial journey in 1969 with the construction of an outer breakwater at Chennai Port.

5. Carrying Forward the Legacy

The Ruia and Essar Family have reaffirmed their commitment to uphold the values cherished by Shri Shashikant Ruia, and to continue the journey he began decades ago.
