Mumbai (India CSR): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday carried out searches at multiple locations linked to Reliance Infrastructure, an Anil Ambani Group company, in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh as part of a probe under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), sources said.
Officials said at least six premises in Mumbai and Mhow were covered during the operation. The investigation relates to allegations of illegal remittances abroad by the company.
Probe into Alleged Diversion of Funds
The agency has been examining alleged financial irregularities amounting to over Rs. 17,000 crore in loans across several Anil Ambani Group entities, including Reliance Infrastructure, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The ED’s action follows a Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) report that accused Reliance Infra of diverting funds disguised as inter-corporate deposits (ICDs) to other group firms through a company named CLE.
According to the report, CLE was not disclosed as a related party to shareholders and audit committees, a move allegedly aimed at bypassing necessary approvals.
Reliance Group Denies Wrongdoing
Denying the allegations, Reliance Infrastructure said the matter dated back a decade. The company maintained that its exposure was limited to about Rs. 6,500 crore, not the Rs. 10,000 crore alleged, and that it had disclosed the details in its financial statements.
“Through mandatory mediation proceedings conducted by a retired Supreme Court judge, Reliance Infrastructure arrived at a settlement to recover its 100 per cent exposure of Rs. 6,500 crore. The mediation award has been filed before the Honourable Bombay High Court,” the company said in a statement.
The ED’s probe remains ongoing.
