From the narrow alleys of Varanasi to the tech corridors of Bangalore, I’ve borne witness to the meteoric rise of digital India. Yet, the echoes of a conversation with a young tech-savvy student from Pune haunt me. “My phone’s outdated in a year,” he casually remarked. It got me thinking – what becomes of these ‘outdated’ devices?
We’ve skyrocketed to being one of the top five e-waste generating countries. Imagine the weight of 3.2 million tonnes. It’s an accumulation of all our discarded devices, many of which were cast away long before their actual end-of-life.
But the real nightmare begins when I think of their disposal. Picture our beautiful landscapes, the Ganges flowing with grace – and now imagine toxins from 95% of our irresponsibly discarded gadgets seeping into them.
Now, what can we do?
Understand the Journey: Before you buy that next device, research its origins. Understand the carbon footprint of its production. More knowledge means more informed decisions.
Repair Before Replace: Recently, I met innovators in Mumbai refurbishing old devices to make them as good as new. Can we make this a trend? Before discarding, consider repair.
Local Community Initiatives: I’ve seen communities in Kerala come together for waste management. Can we extend that model for e-waste? Organize or join local drives for responsible e-waste collection.
Use Your Digital Voice: The student from Pune? He’s now a digital influencer educating his peers on e-waste. Your voice matters. Use your platforms to educate, share, and push for responsible e-consumption.
Engage with Policymakers: Write to your local representatives. Push for more stringent e-waste management laws. Attend town halls. Our advocacy can drive change.
At the Bajaj Foundation, our mission has been to restore the balance between nature and progress. Every phone, every laptop, every device counts. As I pen this down, I remember the hopeful eyes of children in a Delhi school, where we conducted an e-waste awareness workshop. Their zeal, their enthusiasm to make a change, is the wind beneath our wings.
I invite you, especially our spirited Gen Z, to join us in this pivotal journey. Let’s be the generation that cherishes progress without compromising our beautiful nation’s sanctity.
