MUMBAI (India CSR): Reinforcing its commitment to water conservation and rural development, Tata Motors has partnered with the Government of Maharashtra to restore 1,000 water bodies across 20 drought-prone districts of the state. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of water scarcity, improve agricultural sustainability, and enhance rural livelihoods.

Following its successful water restoration efforts in 2024, where 356 water bodies were rejuvenated across 10 districts, Tata Motors now expands its reach to Vidarbha, Marathwada, and other water-deprived regions. This large-scale project aligns with the state’s Gal Mukt Dharan Gal Yukt Shivar Yojana, a community-driven de-siltation program, implemented in partnership with the Soil and Water Conservation Department, NAAM Foundation, and local communities.

Reviving Water Resources for a Sustainable Future

Access to clean and sufficient water is a fundamental necessity, yet several regions in Maharashtra face severe water scarcity due to low rainfall, excessive groundwater depletion, and inefficient storage capacity. Through this collaboration, Tata Motors will work towards:

  • Excavating silt and de-silting water bodies to increase water storage capacity
  • Restoring and rejuvenating existing reservoirs, ponds, and lakes
  • Enhancing groundwater recharge to improve water availability for drinking and irrigation
  • Providing nutrient-rich silt to farmers, improving soil fertility and crop productivity

In 2024 alone, this initiative led to the excavation of 60 lakh cubic meters of silt, significantly raising the water table and creating an additional 7,000 million liters of water storage capacity.

Expanding the Impact Across 20 Districts

The latest phase of the project will extend the initiative to 20 more districts, including:

Amravati, Latur, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Nanded, Parbhani, Akola, Gadchiroli, Yavatmal, Dharashiv, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Ahilya Nagar, Sangli, Solapur, Pune, Palghar, Thane, and more.

With NAAM Foundation as the implementation partner, the project aims to maximize impact through community participation and technology-driven monitoring mechanisms.

A Collaborative Effort to Address Water Scarcity

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Priya Khan, Officer on Special Duty, Chief Minister’s Office, Government of Maharashtra, stated:

“The ‘Gal Mukt Dharan, Gal Mukt Shivar Yojana’ was launched to boost Maharashtra’s water capacity. With the invaluable support of Tata Motors and NAAM Foundation, this initiative has transformed into a people’s movement. Together, we are creating long-term water security while strengthening the resilience of rural communities against droughts.”

Adding to this, Ganesh Thorat, CEO, NAAM Foundation, emphasized:

“Since 2015, NAAM Foundation has been committed to addressing Maharashtra’s water crisis. Partnering with Tata Motors and the Government of Maharashtra has been a significant step in expanding these efforts. After successfully restoring 356 water bodies last year, we are excited to scale our impact to even more districts in 2025.”

Technology and Transparency in Implementation

A key aspect of this initiative is its end-to-end digital monitoring system, ensuring efficient and transparent execution. The program also includes pre-approved funding for farmers to transport excavated silt to their fields, enhancing soil fertility and boosting agricultural productivity.

Tata Motors’ Commitment to Sustainable Development

This ambitious project underscores Tata Motors’ long-standing commitment to social responsibility and environmental sustainability. By restoring water bodies, empowering farmers, and building climate resilience, Tata Motors is actively contributing to a more water-secure and prosperous Maharashtra.

As this initiative scales, thousands of farmers and rural communities will directly benefit, reinforcing the company’s mission to drive sustainable change beyond business operations.
