MUMBAI (India CSR): Swades Foundation, a pioneering non-profit committed to holistic rural development, has reached a significant milestone by transforming 200 villages into Dream Villages in Maharashtra. This achievement aligns with the Letter of Intent (LoI) signed with the Maharashtra Government in 2024, pledging to transform 1,000 villages across the state, with a mission to uplift one million people from poverty every five years.
What Makes a Dream Village?
A Swades Dream Village is more than just an infrastructural transformation—it is a holistic model of self-reliance. Each village fulfills over 40 parameters that define the foundation’s core principles:
- Swachh (Clean): Access to clean drinking water and sanitation.
- Sundar (Beautiful): A clean and aesthetically enhanced environment.
- Swasth (Healthy): Primary healthcare facilities and services.
- Sakshar (Educated): Access to quality education.
- Samruddh (Prosperous): Stable and diversified income sources for households.
These transformations are driven by strong Village Development Committees, which foster local leadership and ensure community ownership, making the change sustainable and community-driven.
Expanding Impact Across Maharashtra
Of the 200 Dream Villages, 199 are located in Raigad, while one has been established in a tribal hamlet in Nashik, marking the beginning of the foundation’s expansion into new regions. The first phase of the Dream Village program, completed in 2022, saw the creation of 75 model villages in Raigad. With the addition of 125 more villages in this phase, Swades is rapidly moving toward its ambitious goal of 1,000 Dream Villages.
A Partnership with Purpose
In September 2024, the foundation partnered with the Government of Maharashtra to scale its Dream Village initiative. The LoI was signed by Zarina Screwvala, Co-Founder of Swades Foundation, and Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde, and Swades Foundation’s Co-Founder Ronnie Screwvala.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded the foundation’s efforts:
“The Dream Village initiative showcases how community-driven development can bring about sustainable change. The work being done for drinking water, sanitation, health, and livelihoods is truly commendable. This is a transformative model for rural development.”
Community-Led Development in Action
The foundation’s success lies in its collaborative approach. Co-Founders Zarina and Ronnie Screwvala emphasized:
“Dreaming together and working together has been the cornerstone of this journey. With guidance from the government, donors, and partners, we are proud to celebrate the aspirations and achievements of these communities. We’re now focused on scaling our efforts to transform 1,000 villages as a national model for rural development.”
The Road Ahead
Swades Foundation’s CEO, Mangesh Wange, highlighted the importance of a holistic approach:
“Rural challenges are multifaceted, requiring comprehensive solutions. Our next phase focuses on empowering new villages to achieve Dream Village status while ensuring that existing ones sustain and inspire neighboring communities to join this movement.”
