GKEL Boosts Quality Education at Kamalanga in Odisha

DHENKNAL: GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL), which operates 1050 MW thermal power plant at Kamalanga in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district, has under-taken numerous initiatives to promote quality education in Mangalpur Panchayat.

To promote quality education in the periphery village, GKEL has established an English medium school GMR Varalakshmi DAV Public School in Mangalpur Panchayat to impart quality education to children living in periphery villages, in its township as well nearby town. At present, 330 children are enrolled in the DAV School from LKG to 9th Standard.

GKEL has initiated to provide school fees concession for the children belong to land loser families.80-children benefited by fees concession scheme. This support will continue for the children every year. In order to improve the quality of education and infrastructure facility in the existing school and Anganwadi centres in the periphery villages, GKEL has taken up lot of initiatives. Two High school, 8 primary and U.P school, one Saraswati Sisu Mandir,16 Anganwadi centres are being supported to provide quality education.

Eleven support teachers provided by GKEL to Government Primary Schools where student and teacher ratio is low. Training program for Support Teachers organized twice every year to develop the knowledge, skills of teachers and raise their motivational level to attain age specific learning outcomes at elementary level. Similarly, computer learning centers have been set up for primary and high school students.

GKLE has provided computers, accessories and teachers to these centers. GKEL in collaboration with IBM is running three kids smart center at Kamalanga, Achalkote and Mangalpur, which provide opportunity to students to learn by using technology enabled learning resources.

IndiaCSR Community Initiative Awards Awards Logo (1)With the help of GKEL, two after school learning centers are running in Kamalanga and Manpur village where extra classes are being taken in three subjects namely mathematics, science and English. Six teachers are engaged to take classes in these centers. A total of 140 students are benefiting from these centers. The same facility for class 7th students also will be started from the current year.

In order to helping students to secure good marks in the board examination test papers are provided to class Xth students every. Special preparatory examinations are conducted for 3 months prior to H.S.C board examination. In order to develop love for learning, creativity sessions are organized regularly.

These classes are organized with the help of experts to prepare various items with the help of waste paper, rice, flower, thread etc. Paper flower, rakhi etc. are prepared by the students in creative class. Besides this also creative writing, story telling etc. are practiced.

To popularize science among primary and high school students, practical experiments, demonstrations and science exhibitions are organized in schools in collaboration with Dhenkanal Regional Science Centre, Odisha. 160 students were taken to District Science Centre on exposure visits. This has helped students to gain knowledge on science. GKEL provides all help to the schools to organize annual sports day, Republic Day, Environment Day, Teachers’ Day and organizes different competitions and events for students.

To strengthen Anganwadi centers, GKEL has provided teaching learning kits and toys to children. Teaching and Learning workshops organized for the Anganwadi Workers on how to make and use such materials to educate children. These are based on Govt. curriculum and strengthened the system. Various items like uniform, shoe for the children, First Aid box, steel tray, steel almirah, playing equipment, weighing machines provided to Anganwadi Centres.

GKEL provides sports materials, teaching & learning materials, library books, magazines and newspapers to all the schools in Mangalpur Panchayat. Scouts and guide units have been started in two high schools at Kamalanga and Mangalpur Panchayat High School. Constructing and repairing infrastructure facilities in schools also being done by GKEL. GKEL has constructed additional class rooms, boundary wall, cycle stand, toilet in schools. Electrification work in six primary schools and one high school was undertaken and adequate number of ceiling fan provided to the schools.
