BELLARY, KARNATAKA (India CSR): In a bold step toward rural empowerment, NMDC Ltd, India’s leading iron ore producer, has launched ten state-of-the-art Medical Mobile Vans and laid the foundation stone for a Sports Complex in Sandur Taluk, Karnataka. This comprehensive initiative aims to bridge gaps in healthcare access and promote a thriving sports culture in the region.

The launch event saw the participation of Annapurna, MLA of Sandur Taluk, and S. B. Singh, Head of Project, NMDC, alongside the District Forest Officer of Bellary District. Together, they flagged off the medical vans and laid the foundation stone, symbolizing a commitment to holistic community development.

Bringing Healthcare to the Doorstep

You might be wondering, “How do these Medical Mobile Vans change lives?” Here’s what you need to know:

NMDC has invested Rs 7 crores to operate the vans for a two-year period in partnership with district authorities, covering 97 villages in Sandur Taluk. These mobile medical units, fully equipped with diagnostic tools, are staffed by a dedicated healthcare team, including a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, and lab technician.

Key Features of the Medical Mobile Vans:

  • Diagnostic Services: Tests for pregnancy, diabetes, typhoid, haemoglobin levels, and more.
  • Emergency Support: Equipped with oxygen cylinders and essential emergency provisions.
  • Weekly Visits: Each village will receive regular, scheduled medical visits to ensure consistent healthcare access.

This initiative eliminates the need for long and arduous travel to the district hospital, bringing essential healthcare services directly to residents’ doorsteps. The program is expected to significantly reduce health disparities and foster a healthier, more resilient community.

Amitava Mukherjee, CMD (Addl. Charge) of NMDC, emphasized the impact of the initiative:

“Our mission at NMDC extends beyond mining—it is about enriching lives. The Medical Mobile Vans and the Sports Complex reaffirm our commitment to the Donimalai region, enhancing healthcare and nurturing a culture of sports and fitness.”

Promoting Sports and Youth Development

In addition to healthcare, NMDC has allocated Rs 2 crores for the construction of a state-of-the-art Sports Complex in Sandur town. This facility will feature:

  • Badminton and Table Tennis Courts: Professional-grade infrastructure.
  • Fully Equipped Gym: Promoting fitness and well-being.
  • Community Access: Open to local youth and sports enthusiasts.

The sports complex is designed to inspire young talents and foster aspirations for professional sports careers while promoting active, healthy lifestyles.
