New Delhi: Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in collaboration with Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Ahmedabad has set up “Sewage Sludge Hygienisation Plant” at Shahwadi, Ahmedabad.

In response to Lok Sabha on 24 Jul, Minister of State for Prime Minister’s Office; Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions; Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, Jitendra Singh stated that the plant loaded with 150 kCi of Co-60 was inaugurated in Feb and is in continuous operation since then.

He also informed that another liquid sludge irradiator “Sludge Hygienisation Research Irradiator” (SHRI) is also operating at Vadodara for radiation treatment of raw sludge containing 3-4% solids for the last 30 years.

Adding to this, the Minister also stated that BARC had given wide publicity to the use of radiation technology for sewage treatment. Their outreach programmes have been used as an effective platform to dispense information about this technology through oral presentations, animated videos, posters, demonstrations at different universities and institutions.
