New Delhi. On the occasion of the 53rd Annual International Literacy Day, AROH Foundation, a leading national level NGO known for its integrated approach towards social development, has gone a step further to create awareness about the importance of literacy among Indians and is encouraging conversations around the challenges and opportunity of education across its project sites. The Foundation has conducted activities in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha, Meghalaya, and Delhi-NCR to promote literacy with a special emphasis on quality education.
In the last three decades, the educational narrative of India has considerably changed. Despite considerable progress, India still faces literacy challenges. The country struggles to provide quality education resulting in poor learning outcomes for a large percentage of children. Out of 22 crore children in the age group of 6-14 years, nearly one crore are still out-of-school. This statics clearly highlights the dire need of connecting these children to a formal education system.
AROH Foundation has fostered literacy at grassroots level through its remedial education program, RISE (Remedial Innovation in School Education) for underprivileged children. On the occasion of International Literacy Day, aligning with the theme of ‘Literacy and Multilingualism’, AROH Foundation has initiated a broader discussion and requested everyone, across the nation – including beneficiary and other stakeholders, to pledge to provide education to at least one individual in their neighbourhood, thereby contributing to the national literacy mission. Additionally, the foundation has brought to the forefront the importance of literacy and multilingualism in India. One cannot deny the fact that linguistic diversity in education is an actual challenge in India and we need to work towards it.
At its project site in Delhi, AROH conducted an awareness drive to make parents understand the importance of education. The Foundation has also felicitated beneficiaries and trainers of all adult literacy programs in 18 villages of Bulandshahr, Budaun, and Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh. A financial literacy workshop has also been conducted at all the villages as a step towards “Digital India Mission”
Addressing the beneficiaries and their parents at project site in Delhi, on the occasion of International Literacy Day, Dr. Neelam Gupta, President and CEO of AROH Foundation stated, ‘Literacy and education take you on the path to freedom. It helps you look at and understand things from a different perspective and opens up a world of possibilities. We firmly believe that every child should be given this opportunity and we work tirelessly each day to ensure that the possibility of a literate India does not remain a dream. But, we need everyone to pitch in to make this possibility a reality, therefore, we are conducting these awareness programs across locations.”
