You’ve probably seen Araku on your feed by now. Green hills with cloud sitting on them, a train disappearing into a tunnel, someone holding coffee with fog all around. It’s been everywhere these last two years, and the reason is simple. It’s cool up there. Vizag is hot and sticky, and two hours inland you’ll want a jacket.
So go. Just plan it properly, because Araku isn’t one place you park at. Get the order wrong and you’ll spend the trip in the car.
Is One Day Enough for Araku Valley?
You can do it in a day, and plenty do. But it means leaving Vizag by 5:30 am, getting home near midnight, cutting every stop short.
Two days is better. Same places, plus a night in the valley. You get a full hour in Borra Caves instead of shuffling along behind a crowd, sunset at Galikonda, fog next morning, and the ghats in daylight.
Day One: The Borra Side
All of this sits on the road up from Vizag, so do it on the way and you won’t come back for it.
- 7:30 am — Leave Vizag. Later than that and Damuku goes hazy.
- 9:45 am — Damuku Viewpoint. An open ridge over the valley, best while the morning is clear.
- 10:45 am — Borra Caves. Big limestone caves cut by the Gosthani river, which government tourism material calls India’s largest. Give it a full hour, and wear closed shoes — the floor is wet.
- 12:10 pm — Katiki Waterfalls. A local jeep in, then a short walk down. Keep eighty minutes.
- 1:45 pm — Lunch in Araku town. Bamboo chicken is the thing to eat, but it takes a while — call ahead.
- 3:00 pm — Coffee plantation, Ananthagiri. Arabica under shade trees, mostly farmed by Adivasi families. Walk in rather than shoot it from the road.
- 4:00 pm — Galikonda Viewpoint. Around 1,500 m, one of the highest points in Andhra Pradesh. Late afternoon is best.
- 4:45 pm — The wooden bridge, if it’s open. They shut it now and then.
- 5:30 pm — Check in and relax.
Day Two: The Valley Floor
Everything today is inside the valley, so there’s little driving and no early start.
- 6:30 am — Optional. Fog over the coffee slopes. This is the bit people remember.
- 9:00 am — Check out and go.
- 9:15 am — Araku Tribal Museum. Homes, tools, clothes and instruments of the local tribes.
- 10:30 am — Coffee Museum. How Araku coffee gets from plantation to cup. The chocolate factory next door uses local cocoa and is good for gifts.
- 12:15 pm — Padmapuram Gardens. Terraced gardens from the 1940s, tree-top huts, a little train. An hour is plenty.
- 2:30 pm — Chaparai Waterfalls. Water spreading over flat rock. Less to look at, more to sit in.
- 3:45 pm — Araku pine forest. Everybody stops for photos.
- 4:30 pm — Start back. Half four gets you down the ghats in daylight.
Vanjangi or Lambasingi, Not Both
This is where people slip up.
Vanjangi is the sunrise spot, about 40 km from Araku town, though the hill roads take longer than that sounds. On a good morning the valleys fill with cloud and only hilltops show. But it’s a 4 am start, so the easy second morning is gone.
Lambasingi is a different direction entirely, towards Chintapalli, known for the cold rather than the views. It isn’t a side trip, it’s a separate journey.
You can fit one, not both, and either way something on day two goes.
Tickets, Cash and What to Bring
Tickets are cheap but there are lots of them, and several counters don’t take cards, so carry small notes. Roughly: Borra Caves ₹60–100 plus ₹100–150 for a camera, the Katiki jeep ₹100–150 a head, and the museums, Padmapuram and Chaparai around ₹30–60.
Bring a jacket between November and February, and fill the tank before the climb, since fuel and food get scarce on the ghats. Phone signal comes and goes.
Road or Train?
By road it’s three and a half to four hours and you choose where to stop, which is what makes the plan above work.
The train is the nicer ride, running through tunnels and over bridges on the Kothavalasa–Kirandul line, with Vistadome coaches on some services. Two catches. It doesn’t reach Araku until after mid-morning, and Borra Caves station is about 5 km from the caves. Train one way and a car the other works well, if you’ve sorted transport in the valley.
Getting Around Once You’re There
Autos and taxis at the station come and go, and the stops are far enough apart that hunting for a ride each time eats the day.
Three ways to handle it. Drive yourself, if you don’t mind the ghats. Take buses along the main route if you’re not in a hurry. When to Go
October to February is the most comfortable. Cold mornings, clear views, best chance of fog at sunrise. It’s also peak season, so expect ghat traffic and higher prices.
June to September fills the waterfalls and turns everything green, but roads are slower and mist can hide a viewpoint.
March to May is warm for Araku, cooler than the coast, with fewer people about. There’s no bad time, really. Just different versions of the same valley.
