NEW DELHI: Ambuja Cement & ACC Limited among the best cement companies in the country were once again recognized for their visionary approach in the areas of sustainable development and social inclusiveness.

Prakash Javadekar, Union HRD Minister handed over the awards to the representative of both companies at an awards ceremony held in New Delhi. Ambuja Cement also bagged two awards for its plant level Social Responsibility initiatives and Sustainability efforts in its Maharashtra & Chhattisgarh plants respectively. ACC received this award for the third consecutive year.

Organized by the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards is a platform to recognize the tireless efforts of those corporates that have molded their business models to accommodate the fundamentals of sustainability and social inclusiveness. By winning the prestigious Awards, Ambuja Cement and ACC’s multi-pronged approach of building capacities and promoting thought leadership on a gamut of issues related to sustainability, has been recognized.

Expressing a deep sense of pride and gratitude on the occasion, Ajay Kapur, Managing Director & CEO of Ambuja Cement said, “This is a proud moment for all of us at Ambuja Cement. Ambuja has always adopted the sustainability path as it is clearly the way of the future. These awards are recognition of our consistent efforts in maintaining a sustainable point of view aligned with the company’s vision to become most sustainable and competitive.”

Harish Badami, CEO & Managing Director of ACC Limited said, “The award affirms ACC’s consistent approach and commitment to sustainable development. It is rewarding to know we make a difference in the lives of lakhs of people every year through engagements that support basic health and education, livelihoods and skill-building. We remain dedicated to maintain our best-in-class status in sustainability while enhancing safety and people processes, building a green supply chain and creating immense value for all our stakeholders.”

Ambuja Cements Ltd, a part of a global conglomerate LafargeHolcim, is one of India’s leading cement manufacturers with over 25 years of operations. The company, initially called Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd, was founded by Narotam Sekhsaria in 1983 in partnership with Suresh Neotia. Global cement major Holcim acquired management control of Ambuja in 2006. The Company has also made strategic investments in ACC Limited. The Company has five integrated cement manufacturing plants and eight cement grinding units across the country. It is the first-ever Indian cement manufacturer to build a captive port with three terminals along the country’s western coastline to facilitate timely, cost effective and environmentally cleaner shipments of bulk cement to its customers. The Company has its own fleet of ships.

ACC, among India’s leading manufacturers of cement and ready mixed concrete, is a member of the LafargeHolcim group. Established in 1936, it is recognized as a pioneer and trend-setter in cement and concrete technology. Among the first Indian companies to include commitment to environment protection as a corporate objective, ACC was first to introduce bulk cement and ready mixed concrete, which helped enhance the pace and quality of construction in India. A champion of sustainable construction, its 70 year old headquarters building, Cement House, became India’s first existing building to win LEED certification and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s 5 star rating for office buildings. ACC’s efforts in community development that began decades before the term CSR was coined have won it acclaim as a responsible corporate citizen.
