Employee-volunteering initiative will donate assembled wheelchairs through HelpAge India

19th India CSR Leadership Summit 2026

MUMBAI (India CSR®): Senior leaders of Alkem Laboratories Ltd. participated in a wheelchair-assembling initiative for underprivileged senior citizens. The activity was organised by Alkem Foundation, the company’s CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility arm, under its employee volunteering programme, SMILE. The wheelchairs assembled by the volunteers will be donated through HelpAge India. The initiative reflects Alkem’s effort to create meaningful social impact by encouraging employees and leaders to contribute their time, skills and effort towards community welfare.

Hands-On Volunteering

The wheelchair-assembling activity focused on improving mobility and dignity for senior citizens from economically weaker communities. By participating directly in the initiative, Alkem’s senior leaders demonstrated that corporate social responsibility can extend beyond financial support. Employee volunteering brings people closer to community needs. It also helps create a stronger culture of empathy, responsibility and shared purpose within an organisation.

‘We Care Month’

Alkem has dedicated the month of August to CSR activities driven by employee volunteering. The initiative is called “We Care Month” and is based on the belief that charity begins at home. During the month, employees across the organisation participate in initiatives designed to support communities. August is significant for Alkem as it includes the company’s Foundation Day and the birthdays of its Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Late Shri Samprada Singh, and Co-Founder and Executive Chairman, Shri B.N. Singh.

Reinforcing the company’s commitment to community care.

Commenting on the initiative, Mrs. Madhurima Singh, Executive Director and Chairperson of the CSR Committee, Alkem, said, “Giving back to the community has always been part of Alkem’s DNA. Our founders envisioned an organisation that would make a difference to people’s lives, and that spirit continues to shape our culture even today. We believe meaningful change comes when people give not just their resources, but also their time and effort for the well-being of the communities we serve.”

Blood Donation

As part of We Care Month, Alkem also organised a blood donation drive across locations. The drive received strong employee participation, with employees donating 803 units of blood in a single day. The collected blood was handed over to the Indian Red Cross Society. The initiative highlights the potential of structured employee engagement programmes to support public-health needs and mobilise collective action.

Wider Community Activities

Alkem Foundation is conducting other community-focused activities during the month. These include food distribution, cleanliness drives, visits to old-age homes and orphanages, and audio-book recording for visually impaired persons. The range of activities addresses different community needs while providing employees with opportunities to contribute through direct service.

SMILE Programme

Alkem’s volunteering culture has grown through the SMILE — Support to Make Individual Lives Easier — programme, launched in 2022. The programme has enabled employees to participate in social initiatives across India. Between 2022 and 2026, SMILE recorded more than 31,151 employee participations, over 100 volunteering activities, and more than 1,28,312 volunteering hours. The programme has reached and benefited over 5,700 community members across the country. Through initiatives such as wheelchair assembly, blood donation and community outreach, Alkem Foundation continues to connect employee participation with inclusive and practical social impact.
