Aligns growth with internationally benchmarked 1.5°C climate pathway; commits to near-term emissions reductions through FY2033–34 and Net Zero by 2050

HYDERABAD: AGI Greenpac, India’s leading integrated packaging products company and parent of AGI Glaspac, one of India’s most profitable listed glass packaging companies on the NSE and BSE, announced the submission of its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), marking a significant milestone in its sustainability and decarbonisation journey.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a globally recognised organisation that enables companies to set greenhouse gas reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement and the latest climate science.  It is widely regarded as an international benchmark for credible corporate climate action.

AGI Greenpac’s targets are aligned with the “1.5°C pathway”, which aims to limit the rise in average global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This threshold is associated with significant environmental and socio-economic risks, including extreme heatwaves, water stress, agricultural disruption, and sea-level rise. Meeting this pathway requires sustained emissions reductions at scale.

India, as one of the world’s fastest-growing manufacturing economies, faces increasing exposure to climate-related risks such as extreme heat, erratic rainfall, and water scarcity. As industrial growth accelerates, integrating climate responsibility into business strategy is becoming both an environmental necessity and a strategic business priority. For energy-intensive sectors such as glass manufacturing, this transition is key to maintaining long-term competitiveness in an evolving global marketplace.

Recognising this structural shift, AGI Greenpac has adopted a science-led decarbonisation roadmap using FY2023–24 as its baseline year. The Company has defined near-term emissions reduction targets through FY2033–34 and has committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. The targets have been formally submitted to SBTi and are currently under validation.

Commenting on the submission, Mr. Rajesh Khosla, CEO, AGI Greenpac Limited, said: “Industrial growth can no longer come at the cost of climate stability. This decade is critical. Delayed action will only make the transition more disruptive and more expensive for businesses and economies alike. For an industry like glass manufacturing, transformation cannot be incremental; it must be deliberate and time bound. By committing to science-based targets, we are holding ourselves accountable to measurable progress. This is about making climate discipline a boardroom priority, embedding it into capital decisions, and ensuring that our growth is decoupled from emissions. The companies that act decisively today will shape the competitive landscape of tomorrow.”

Chandramohan Mangalagiri, Chief Technology Officer, AGI Glaspac, said: “Our decarbonisation roadmap focuses on increasing renewable energy adoption across facilities, enhancing energy efficiency in glass manufacturing, strengthening circular economy practices through higher recycled content, and optimising logistics emissions. As we undertake major growth initiatives including the new state-of-the-art glass manufacturing plant in Madhya Pradesh, and the expansion into aluminium can packaging, sustainability remains embedded in every capital investment and operational decision.”

AGI Greenpac’s comprehensive decarbonisation strategy encompasses four strategic pillars:

  • Renewable Energy: AGI is significantly expanding its Renewable Energy footprint to power “Green” packaging with sustainable energy. It has installed ~21.0 MWp of solar power capacity across its manufacturing facilities, contributing to an estimated annual mitigation of over 22,000 tCO2eq.
  • Circular Economy: AGI Greenpac reuses over 200,000 tonnes of cullet (recycled glass) annually and has set a target to increase cullet utilisation to 50% by 2027, reducing energy intensity and raw material consumption.
  • Technological Innovation: AGI has reduced Scope 1 emissions by 11,880 tCO2eq, through ongoing decarbonisation efforts. It has also partnered with Glass Futures to evaluate alternative fuels and support long-term decarbonisation roadmap.
  • Logistics Optimisation: AGI is implementing supply chain decarbonisation through electric vehicles (EV) adoption, route optimisation, and improved load efficiency across our supply chain.

With the submission of its SBTi targets, AGI Greenpac is entering the next phase of its sustainability journey – one defined by measurable progress, transparent disclosure, and disciplined execution. As climate expectations reshape global manufacturing, the Company’s 1.5°C-aligned roadmap positions it to deliver sustainable packaging solutions while contributing meaningfully to India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the world’s long-term decarbonisation goals.

Validation of the submitted targets by SBTi is currently awaited
