In June this year, when addressing the joint sitting of Parliament, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind said, “India had joined the league of countries with the most number of startups in the world.” The government’s ‘Startup India’ initiative aims to foster entrepreneurship and promote innovation by creating an ecosystem that is beneficial to the growth of budding entrepreneurs.

However, social startups in India haven’t been successful in attracting investors compared to technology startups. Plus, the number of social startups pales in comparison to the number of technology ones, as according to Nasscom in 2018, there were up to 7,700 tech startups in India, while social startups were just more than 400 but growing at more than 20 per cent year-on-year. Access to funding, equity and debt are the biggest challenges, which can be partly remedied by better informed and trained entrepreneurs
