New Delhi – Delhi’s street children will put on their dancing shoes in a bid to spread awareness on plastic use and wastage mitigation in New Delhi on 27 Aug.
The dance show is being organised by a cultural not-for-profit organisation ‘Flying Feet’. The NGO provides dance and music lessons to street children.
The dance performance will take place during the ‘Plastic Waste Dialogue’ which is being hosted by India CSR Network – largest Indian news portal on corporate social responsibility and corporate governance at The Imperial Hotel.
The dialogue is co-hosted by Gonative and United Way India Plog Run.
“Art is the most influential way of creating awareness and we thought why not give this opportunity to the children who need a platform like ours to show their skills,” India CSR founder Rusen Kumar said.
“We all have a responsibility towards the environment in terms of not only reducing plastic waste but also educating people in the manner we can. Flying Feet is trying to give a voice to its efforts through art,” Founder Rajesh Singh told India CSR.
“While the children are putting up a dance show, India CSR’s idea has also sensitised the children to practice some of the things that will be showcased in the performance,” he added.
The children are more aware about the environmental damage related to plastic waste, Singh said.
The day-long affair will see some of the most powerful voices in government, industry, non-governmental organisations, international agencies, academia, and research organisations.
India’s annual plastic consumption at 16.5 million tn is expected to cross 20 million tn by 2020 according to a report.
Over 80% of the total plastic produced in India is discarded which ends up filling landfills, choking drains and eventually flowing in rivers and seas where it is ingested by marine animals.
It leaches into soil and water, contaminating the natural environment with poisonous dioxins.
Effective management of plastic waste therefore is crucial to do away with environmental hazard caused by plastics.
