MUMBAI: The UPL Vasudha, a nature conservation CSR initiative of the UPL Limited received Award in the category of Life of land for Sarus Conservation initiative as one of the Most Promising Programme Award which complements the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Felicitation ceremony was recently held at New Delhi.
Sarus Crane (Grus Antigone) is a resident species of Gujarat, mostly found in Kheda, Anand and Vadodara district. This species faces extinction due to man made constructions and activities that erode its nesting and breeding sites. Habitat loss becomes a threat to their existence. Sustainable efforts to protect and conserve the species calls for long term solutions involving the community.
Awareness programs in the major breeding, foraging and roosting areas go a long way in preserving the species. The changemakers (Sarus Project team) behind the project have collected data from the project location at Kheda and have done intensive field work; research & training to conserve this vulnerable species.
The team has worked with community leaders to villagers, engaged with government organizations for educational institutions in Kheda taluka, Gujarat so that the stakeholders could understand the cause in identifying the development gaps and the needs that they must address in order to achieve the SDGs.
Last but not the least Rishi Pathania, Dr. Jatinder Kaur, Jatin Patel and UPL CSR team heartily congratulates all the stakeholders for their participation and hard work inmaking the Sarus Conservation Project a successful conservation effort.
