WEST BOKARO: The mobile cataract operation camp, a joint collaboration between Sankara Nethralaya and Tata Steel, concluded today. The free-of-cost camp was organised to provide best-in-class eye care facilities to the rural areas near West Bokaro.
92 patients from nearby villages were operated for cataract along with Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) transplant. The camp was organised at the Community Centre, Mukundabera through which the company reached out to the people of Ramgarh, Hazaribagh and Bokaro districts.
The 10-day long camp began on November 13, 2016. Screening of patients continued till November 16. More than 630 patients registered within the first four days, with various eye related ailments. Of them, 103 patients were diagnosed with cataract, out of which 92 turned up for operation at the camp itself. This was facilitated by Mobile Eye Surgical Unit (MESU) developed by Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, between November 17 and 22, 2016. Mesu is equipped with all high end facilities like Auto Refraction, Slit Lamp for Retina Fundoscopy, Digital Biometric Record along with Pathological facilities.
Addressing the gathering at the concluding ceremony, Sanjay Kumar Singh, General Manager, West Bokaro Division, Tata Steel said, “Tata Steel has always been working for the welfare of the community and has given priority to healthcare services. There is no better work than providing vision to people. I am sure with more such camps in the future, we will positively impact many more lives.”
The objective of this camp was to reach out to the aged people with cataract in remote villages and provide them with a gift of vision. Present on the occasion, Mr Mohan Mahato, President, Rastriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangh (RSMS) and Mr Nirankush Mishra, Secretary, RCMS thanked Tata Steel for organising the camp, and opined that people at remote locations would certainly benefit from such camps.
Among others present at the concluding event were Anand Kumar, Chief, Special Projects, West Bokaro, Tata Steel; Kanchan Kumari, Up-pramukh, Mandu Block; Dr B R P Rao, Chief Medical Officer, Tata Central Hospital, West Bokaro and Keshav Kumar Ranjan, Unit Head, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) along with other senior officials of Tata Steel and Tata Steel Rural Development Society.
