MUMBAI: Bajaj Electricals Ltd. collaborated with Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co Ltd. for plantation in the proposed Butterfly Garden at Vikhroli on 3 September 2016. The butterfly garden is one of the key educational infrastructure for schools and colleges of Mumbai that visit Godrej mangroves for biodiversity education.
Around 15 employees from Bajaj Electricals Ltd planted 125 saplings, which added to the diversity of the site.
Atul Sharma, Executive President- HRAD, Bajaj Electricals Ltd. shared his experience. “We have to nurture our organization to attract a diverse talent pool to enhance the quality of life and bring happiness to our customers. Similarly, we have to nurture nature to attract multiple colourful butterflies to support our ecosystem. Spending quality time in midst of nature with colleagues and nature enthusiasts was a very self-enriching experience for all of us. We will be looking forward for more such engagements.”
Elaborating about the project Laxmikant Deshpande (Manager-wetland management & Sustainability), “A butterfly garden is habitat with specific plant species suitable for feeding and reproduction of butterflies. For example, plants like Lantana, Jamaican Blue Spike attract butterflies for their nectar and thus called ‘Food Plant’ while Canna, Curry Leaf attract butterflies for laying eggs on them and thus called ‘Host Plant’. Our research reveals Godrej campus hosts around 82+ butterfly species of total 150+ butterfly species found in Mumbai. The proposed butterfly garden is our humble effort to conserve butterflies for which we have selected 60 suitable plant species so far.”
Godrej has sustainably managed 1750 acre mangrove ecosystem on western bank of Thane creek with a three-pronged approach of research, conservation and awareness. The ISO 14001 certified forest hosts 16 mangrove and mangrove associate species, 82 butterfly species, 208 bird species, 13 crab species, 7 prawn species, 20 fish species, 30 reptile species and mammals like jackal, mongoose and wild boar.
