New Delhi: The inhumane killing of hundreds of children in a school in Peshawar has once again proved that children are increasingly becoming easy targets of violence around the world.
Under international humanitarian law, schools are protected civilian objects, and therefore benefit from the humanitarian principles of distinction and proportionality. Attacks on schools are one of the six grave violations as identified by the United Nations Security Council for protection of children during conflict. However, this gruesome act has violated all possible protocols and affected children in the worst possible manner even when they have no role to play in this conflict of power.
Puja Marwaha, CEO, CRY – Child Rights and You says, “We strongly condemn this act which has cost the lives the innocent children. It’s sad that these children of Peshawar lost their right to be children, for no fault of theirs. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families of the children killed in the attacks.”
Children are the most vulnerable victims of conflict. In the past decade alone, armed conflicts are estimated to have claimed the lives of over two million children and physically maimed six million more (According to EU guidelines on children and armed conflict).
