Company: Jagmag Lights Private Limited

GREATER NOIDA: The first thing that stands out inside Jagmag Lights’ factory is that the chandeliers do not arrive here finished.

They are built here.

Among sheets of brass, slabs of stone, moulds, tools, wiring, crystals and the workstations of skilled kaarigars, the Greater Noida facility offers a view of a side of India’s designer lighting industry that consumers rarely see. A fixture that may eventually hang in a luxury hotel, a residence or a large architectural project begins its life on the factory floor.

This is the manufacturing model that Jagmag Lights Private Limited, founded in 2015 by Chirag Chaudhary and Upasana Singh, is betting can help reduce India’s dependence on imported designer lighting.

Walk through many Indian lighting showrooms and imported fixtures remain a familiar sight. But the dependence on imports in the lighting industry extends beyond finished products. Elcoma, the trade body representing India’s lamp and lighting component manufacturers, has previously highlighted the industry’s continued reliance on Chinese components and raw materials, particularly in areas such as chips and other critical inputs.

Jagmag’s approach is to move as much of the process as possible under one roof.

The company designs its fixtures, develops moulds, manufactures components and carries out finishing at its own facility. Its current catalogue includes more than 1,100 designs spanning chandeliers, wall lights and pendant lights.

That control over manufacturing is particularly important when a light needs to be repaired years after installation.

According to Chaudhary, the problem with some imported designer fixtures becomes apparent only after the original sale. A driver may fail. A crystal may break. A component may need replacing. By then, the overseas manufacturer may have discontinued the model or become difficult to reach.

Jagmag’s answer is to retain control over its moulds and dies and maintain the ability to manufacture replacement components. The company says it can provide spare parts for at least 10 years.

For custom projects, it says its typical production timeline is between 15 and 20 working days, depending on the complexity of the order.

Where design meets the factory floor

Inside the facility, the distinction between design and manufacturing is less obvious than it is in a conventional retail business.

Materials arrive as raw inputs rather than finished lighting components. Brass, marble, natural stone and crystal are shaped, assembled and finished for individual fixtures. Much of the work still depends on the hands and experience of the company’s craftsmen.

That craftsmanship is central to the company’s identity.

Chaudhary argues that India’s lighting industry has an opportunity not simply to assemble imported products, but to develop its own manufacturing capabilities and design language.

“Every year, I see more of India’s chandelier and wall light shelves filled with fixtures nobody here got to build,” Chaudhary said. “That’s not a small industry problem. Money and skill leave India every time someone buys a light that India didn’t get to build.”

It is an argument that goes beyond one factory.

India has built a substantial market for premium interiors, hospitality projects and architectural lighting, but a significant portion of the value chain can still sit outside the country when products or components are imported.

For manufacturers such as Jagmag, the opportunity is to capture more of that value domestically, from design and tooling to craftsmanship, finishing, servicing and replacement parts.

A manufacturing philosophy rooted in natural materials

There is another idea running through Jagmag’s product development: the use of materials that the company considers close to their natural origin.

Stone, brass, marble, natural crystal, wood, bamboo, jute, terracotta and hand-finished fabrics form part of the material vocabulary the company is developing.

Chaudhary connects this philosophy with Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian system that places importance on the relationship between built spaces and the natural elements.

The company’s position is that lighting should not be treated merely as a source of illumination or decoration, but as an element that contributes to the character and atmosphere of a space.

That philosophy is visible in the way the company talks about its products: less as mass-produced electrical fixtures and more as objects combining material, craftsmanship, light and interior design.

Keeping the value chain in India

For Upasana Singh, Jagmag’s co-founder, the manufacturing story is ultimately about people as much as products.

“We’re not just building chandeliers,” Singh said. “Every fixture we finish here keeps a paycheck, a skill, and a rupee inside India instead of sending it abroad.”

The argument reflects a broader question facing India’s manufacturing sector: whether the country’s growing consumer and luxury markets will primarily create opportunities for domestic manufacturers or continue to expand demand for imported products.

The market itself is growing.

Industry estimates put India’s high-end lighting market at approximately $919.6 million, or around ₹7,600 crore, in 2025. Those estimates project the market reaching approximately $1.73 billion by 2034.

For Indian manufacturers, that expansion represents both an opportunity and a challenge.

The opportunity is straightforward: more hotels, homes, offices, restaurants and architectural projects require increasingly sophisticated lighting.

The challenge is developing the manufacturing ecosystem capable of supplying that demand at scale while maintaining quality, design and after-sales support.

Beyond the chandelier

Jagmag currently supplies lighting for hospitality, architectural and residential projects in India and overseas. The company is also a DPIIT-recognised startup and positions its manufacturing operation within the broader Make in India movement.

But the company’s ambitions appear to extend beyond simply producing more fixtures.

Chaudhary says Jagmag is working on developments beyond its existing product range, although he is not disclosing details yet.

What is already clear from the factory floor is the direction of travel: greater control over design, materials, manufacturing and servicing, with the company attempting to build a lighting business in which the product’s entire story, from raw material to finished fixture, begins much closer to home.

For a country that has spent years importing a significant share of its premium lighting, the question is no longer simply whether India can make a designer chandelier.

Factories such as Jagmag are attempting to demonstrate that India can design it, manufacture it, repair it, and keep the skills required to make it alive here too.
