Holistic Development Approach

Jindal Foundation’s CSR strategy follows a process of baseline survey, need assessment, project implementation, monitoring and exit strategy. The company says its approach is guided by integrated social, economic and environmental development, with initiatives aligned to 16 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The CSR programme covers health and nutrition; drinking water and sanitation; education and skill development; environment and agriculture; sustainable livelihoods; women’s empowerment; rural infrastructure; social inclusion; sports; art and culture.

Healthcare And Nutrition

At Tamnar, Jindal Aarogyam operates as a 27-bedded multi-speciality hospital, providing free outpatient care for all and free inpatient care for ultra-poor patients. The CSR portfolio also includes mobile health camps, emergency ambulances, telemedicine, maternal and child healthcare, menstrual-health initiatives and support for poor-patient treatment. Under Project Vatsalya, more than 70 village health volunteers, known as Swasthya Sanginis, support community-level health mobilisation. The programme also provides care and support to more than 250 persons affected by sickle-cell anaemia. JPL CSR has adopted tuberculosis patients in Tamnar and Gharghoda blocks under the PM TB Mukt Bharat campaign, providing food baskets. Kishori Express supports haemoglobin testing and counselling for adolescent girls.

Education And Skills

JPL CSR has supported infrastructure in more than 50 government schools. Its Jindal Angels programme operates nine centres with 290 children; more than 700 children have been mainstreamed to date. The company has also continued holistic support for 26 Birhor tribal children studying at O.P. Jindal School, Kunjemura. Free transport facilities have been arranged for 653 students from 17 villages, helping reduce school dropouts, particularly among girls. At O.P. Jindal Community College, 101 rural youth completed training in fitter, electrical and welding trades, with 95 per cent placement reported. More than 125 girls have been supported under Project Yashasvi, while 20 anganwadi centres have been upgraded as model anganwadis.

Women’s Livelihoods

Jindal Foundation’s livelihood programmes include mushroom cultivation, tailoring, garment production, terracotta work, sanitary-napkin production, bakery units and other community enterprises. More than 1,000 women are associated with mushroom farming and are reported to earn an additional Rs. 5,000-Rs. 6,000 per month for around eight months of the year. Under the Aakriti project, over 600 women have received basic and advanced sewing training, with 100 women associated with a garment-production unit. The organisation has also extended handholding support to 209 self-help groups.

Community Infrastructure

In Tamnar, JPL CSR has completed four community buildings at Rabo, Salihari, Basanpali and Janjgeer, while additional construction and renovation works are under way. The company has reported completion of 3,548.3 running metres of cement-concrete roads, 3,220 running metres of murrum roads and one culvert at Budiya. Rural electrification initiatives include installation of 170 poles, 400 LED lights and 180 ACP signage boards across a six-kilometre stretch between Bank Colony and Savitri Nagar, benefiting more than 10,000 people. The programme has also installed 328 streetlights in several villages.

Inclusion And Culture

The CSR programme provides continuing support to Birhor tribal families, children in Jindal Children Home, visually impaired children at Blind Ashram and girls from economically weaker families. It has also undertaken awareness programmes against alcoholism, reaching over 2,427 people through 75 programmes. In sports and culture, JPL CSR supports local folk artists, cricket, kabaddi and volleyball. On World Tribal Day, musical instruments were distributed to 24 tribal folk groups, covering 455 artists. The O.P. Jindal Cricket Academy provides regular coaching to 45 youth, while grassroots sports programmes have engaged hundreds of young participants in Tamnar.

The recognition at the Raigarh CSR Summit highlighted Jindal Power’s continued focus on need-based, community-led development in and around Tamnar.
