Prime Minister says five new nuclear reactors will begin operations within this decade, as India strengthens energy security for the AI and data-centre era
NEW DELHI (India CSR): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that India is moving towards a target of 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, signalling a major long-term push to strengthen the country’s clean-energy base and energy security. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 80th Independence Day, the Prime Minister said the rapidly growing requirements of Artificial Intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and data centres have made reliable energy supply a strategic national priority.
He said India aims to begin operations at five new nuclear reactors within this decade. The planned expansion is expected to help meet rising electricity demand while supporting the country’s transition towards cleaner and more dependable sources of power.
Nuclear Energy for a High-Tech Economy
Prime Minister Modi said the country’s future energy needs will be shaped by advanced technologies and digital infrastructure. AI systems, semiconductor plants, cloud-computing facilities and data centres require large quantities of uninterrupted electricity. Nuclear power can provide stable, round-the-clock electricity and complement renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Unlike weather-dependent energy sources, nuclear plants can generate consistent baseload power, making them significant for a growing industrial and digital economy.
Five New Reactors Within This Decade
The Prime Minister said India has set a goal of starting five new nuclear reactors during the present decade. This would mark another step in expanding the country’s nuclear-energy infrastructure. The expansion plan is part of a broader approach to reinforce energy security, reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and build a stronger domestic technology ecosystem. Nuclear capacity will be especially relevant as India scales advanced manufacturing and pursues greater self-reliance in strategically important sectors.
Fast Breeder Technology Milestone
Highlighting progress in indigenous nuclear capability, the Prime Minister said India achieved an important milestone in fast breeder nuclear technology this year. Fast breeder technology is considered significant because it can help make more efficient use of nuclear fuel resources. It also has relevance for India’s long-term goal of developing greater self-reliance in the nuclear fuel cycle. The 100 GW target by 2047 forms part of India’s wider Viksit Bharat vision.
