Reaching 5 lakh children and 4 lakh women, strengthening India’s grassroots human capital

NEW DELHI (India CSR®): As India celebrates its 79th Independence Day and begins its journey towards India@80, Nand Ghar, Vedanta’s flagship social impact initiative under the Anil Agarwal Foundation, is reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the foundations of the nation’s future through early childhood development, nutrition, healthcare and women’s empowerment.

With a growing network of 15,000 modernised Anganwadis across 18 states and 76 districts, Nand Ghar, Vedanta’s flagship social impact initiative, is transforming the traditional Anganwadi into a holistic hub for early childhood care, nutrition, education, healthcare and women’s empowerment. Today, the programme reaches more than 5 lakh children and 4 lakh women, strengthening the foundations of human capital at the grassroots. As India moves towards its 80th year of Independence, Nand Ghar is contributing to the vision of a stronger, more inclusive India by ensuring that children have the right start in life while women have greater access to opportunities that enable them to participate more actively in the economy and community.

The promise of India@80 is not only about economic growth, but also about creating opportunities for every citizen to participate in and benefit from the nation’s development journey. Investments in children’s early years and women’s economic empowerment will be critical to achieving this vision. By bringing together childcare, nutrition, healthcare and livelihood opportunities under one roof, Nand Ghar is helping create stronger families, more resilient communities and a more inclusive pathway to national development.

Celebrating the occasion, Shashi Arora, CEO, Nand Ghar, said, “As India approaches 80 years of Independence, we stand at a defining moment to shape the next chapter of the nation’s growth. As envisioned by our Chairman, Anil Agarwal, India’s progress must be rooted in inclusive growth, where every child has the opportunity to thrive and every woman has the opportunity to realise her full economic potential. Through Nand Ghar, we are translating this vision into action at the grassroots, creating strong foundations for early childhood development while enabling women to access greater opportunities for livelihoods and economic participation. By investing in children and women today, we are building the capabilities, confidence and human capital that will shape India’s growth story for decades to come, towards a stronger, more inclusive and developed India.”

The impact of Nand Ghar is being reflected in the growing confidence, capabilities and opportunities available to families and communities at the grassroots. Mithilesh, a Nand Ghar Didi, has transitioned from primarily managing her household to teaching children and supporting women in her village, enabled by the skills, training and confidence gained through Nand Ghar. Her journey reflects the broader role of Nand Ghar in creating spaces where children can learn and thrive, while community members are equipped with knowledge, skills and opportunities to contribute more actively to their families and communities. By strengthening capabilities at the grassroots, Nand Ghar is helping build more confident individuals, stronger families and more resilient communities.

As the country advances towards India@80 and the larger vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, Nand Ghar remains committed to expanding access to quality childcare services and creating pathways for women’s economic participation. By investing in human potential at the grassroots, the initiative seeks to contribute to an India that is healthier, more skilled, equitable and ready for the opportunities of the decades ahead.

Nand Ghar, a flagship project under the Anil Agarwal Foundation, is modernizing India’s Anganwadi ecosystem to empower women and children. With nearly 15,000 centres across 18 states, Nand Ghar provides integrated services in nutrition, early childhood education, healthcare, and women empowerment through skill development. Currently reaching over 5 lakh children and 4 lakh women, the project aims to impact 8 crore children and 2 crore women across the country’s 14.7 lakh Anganwadis.
