Mother Dairy launched a new milk packaging solution that could reshape sustainability practices in India’s dairy industry.
NEW DELHI: As businesses face mounting pressure to reduce their environmental footprint, Mother Dairy has unveiled a new milk packaging solution that could reshape sustainability practices in India’s dairy industry. The company has announced the launch of a naturally degradable milk pouch that breaks down in soil over time, offering an alternative to conventional plastic packaging. The initiative, set to begin in Delhi NCR on World Environment Day 2026, reflects the growing emphasis on circular economy principles and responsible consumption in the FMCG sector.
The company claimed that the new pouch has been designed to degrade naturally in soil over a few years. According to Mother Dairy, the packaging material transforms into bioavailable wax, which is then broken down by microbes present in the soil into natural elements. The move comes at a time when plastic packaging waste remains a major environmental concern in India.
Milk pouches are widely used by households every day, and their disposal has long been a challenge for urban waste management systems. If implemented at scale, such packaging innovations could help reduce the environmental footprint of the dairy sector. Mother Dairy said the new pouch was developed after more than four years of research. The company also clarified that the packaging change will not affect the quality, shelf life, or taste of the milk. Consumers will not be required to change the way they store, handle, or dispose of the pouch.
Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board and Mother Dairy, said the initiative reflects the dairy sector’s ability to set new benchmarks in sustainability. He added that the newly introduced packaging is designed to degrade in soil within a few years instead of centuries, without affecting consumer milk prices.
Mother Dairy Managing Director Jayatheertha Chary said the pouch will continue to remain recyclable while also offering the additional benefit of natural degradation. He said the innovation is aimed at addressing the problem of fugitive plastic and supporting a cleaner ecosystem.
Along with the new pouch, Mother Dairy is also refreshing the design of its milk portfolio. The updated packaging will begin with the Cow Milk variant and will include a new visual identity, cleaner typography, brighter colours, and a “Note of Care” brand element inspired by the company’s logo. Mother Dairy was commissioned in 1974 and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board. It was established under Operation Flood, India’s major dairy development programme. The company sells milk, dairy products, edible oils under the Dhara brand, and fruits and vegetables under the Safal brand. The launch will be watched closely as a test case for sustainable packaging in India’s dairy industry.
