Industrial tragedy in Sakti district as boiler blast kills 14; PM and CM announce relief, authorities launch investigation.

RAIPUR, CHHATTISGARH (India CSR): In one of the deadliest industrial accidents in recent times, at least 14 people, mostly labourers, were killed and 19 others injured after a boiler tube blast at a Vedanta Limited power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The incident, which occurred at the company’s thermal power facility in Singhitarai village around 2.30 pm, unleashed a surge of superheated steam that engulfed workers, many of whom were on a lunch break or engaged in maintenance work.

Blast During Routine Work Turns Fatal

According to district officials, the explosion originated from a boiler pipeline, releasing steam at temperatures estimated to be around 600 degrees Celsius.

“After the pipeline burst, superheated steam fell on workers who were having their lunch or walking in open areas. Several suffered severe burns,” a senior district official said.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos. Ajit Naskar, a worker from West Bengal employed at the plant, said the blast occurred suddenly while workers had just resumed duties after lunch.

“We were painting at a height of around 17 metres. Suddenly there was a loud explosion and smoke everywhere. Some managed to escape, but many were trapped,” he said.

Rescue Operations and Medical Response

Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur said rescue operations began after the boiler was shut down and allowed to cool.

“All workers have been rescued. The injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals,” he said.

Most of the injured have been admitted to hospitals in neighbouring Raigarh district, while some critically injured workers have been referred to a private hospital in Bilaspur for advanced treatment.

District Collector Amrit Vikas Topno confirmed that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered and assured that the injured are receiving the best possible medical care.

Vedanta Expresses Regret, Launches Internal Probe

In an official statement, Vedanta Limited confirmed that the incident occurred in Unit 1 of its boiler system and involved personnel from its business partner, NGSL.

“We regret to inform you that an incident has occurred at our Singhitarai plant. Our immediate priority is to ensure the best medical assistance to those affected,” the company said.

The firm added that it has initiated a detailed investigation in coordination with authorities and is extending full support to victims and their families.

Grief and Anger Among Families

Outside the plant premises, grieving families and local residents gathered, demanding accountability.

Chandra Sen Patel, whose father worked as a housekeeper at the facility, said, “My father died on the spot.” Protesters called for strict action against those responsible and better safety measures at industrial units.

Government Announces Compensation, Orders Probe

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the loss of lives and announced ex gratia relief of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai termed the incident “extremely distressing and heart-wrenching.”

“The state government will provide ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to the injured. Free and proper medical treatment has been ensured,” he said.

The Chief Minister also assured a thorough and impartial investigation.

“Whosoever is found guilty will face the strictest possible action,” he added.

Rising Concerns Over Industrial Safety

The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over industrial safety standards and compliance in large-scale power plants across the country.

Experts point out that boiler systems, if not properly maintained and monitored, pose significant risks due to high pressure and temperature conditions.

Authorities are expected to examine whether safety protocols were followed and if negligence or technical failure led to the explosion.

A Community in Mourning

As rescue efforts conclude and investigations begin, the focus now shifts to supporting affected families and ensuring accountability.

For the workers and their families, however, the loss is irreparable — a stark reminder of the human cost behind industrial operations.
