CSR Obligation and Total Spending

The annual report states that Britannia Industries calculated its CSR obligation based on the average net profits of the previous three financial years. The average net profit stood at approximately Rs 2,507.95 crores. As per the Companies Act, 2013, this resulted in a mandatory CSR spend of around Rs 50.16 crores.

However, the company reported a total CSR expenditure of Rs 50.44 crores for the year. This includes Rs 50.16 crores spent directly on projects and an additional Rs 28 lakhs allocated for impact assessment activities. These assessments are carried out to measure the effectiveness of CSR programmes and ensure that the intended outcomes are achieved.

On a consolidated basis, the total CSR spending stood at Rs 50.33 crores, indicating alignment between standalone and group-level initiatives.

Focus on Nutrition Through Britannia Nutrition Foundation

One of the central pillars of Britannia’s CSR strategy continues to be nutrition. According to the annual report, the Britannia Nutrition Foundation (BNF) plays a key role in implementing these programmes across different states.

The report highlights that during FY 2024–25, the foundation reached over 3,05,606 beneficiaries. This marked a significant increase compared to previous years. The programmes are mainly targeted at children under five years of age, adolescent girls, and pregnant and lactating women.

Through a network of over 1,290 Anganwadi centres, the foundation conducts regular growth monitoring for children. The aim is to identify early signs of malnutrition and provide timely intervention. The report also notes that school-going children were provided with fortified food products, especially iron-rich biscuits, to address anemia.

In addition, counselling sessions were conducted for mothers. These sessions focus on improving dietary habits, promoting breastfeeding, and ensuring proper nutrition during pregnancy. According to the report, such interventions are designed to create long-term improvements in community health.

Expansion of Community Health Initiatives

Healthcare remains another important area of CSR spending. The annual report highlights Britannia’s continued partnership with the Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital (NWMH). Through this collaboration, the company supports infrastructure upgrades and service improvements at the hospital.

The report states that the hospital serves nearly 2.5 lakh women and children every year. CSR funds have been used to improve facilities, enhance patient care, and ensure better access to quality medical services for low-income groups.

Such initiatives are aimed at strengthening public health systems rather than creating parallel structures. The company’s approach, as reflected in the report, focuses on supporting existing institutions to improve their reach and efficiency.

Supporting Women and Youth Through Sports

Apart from health and nutrition, Britannia’s CSR activities also extend to women’s empowerment and youth development. According to the annual report, the company launched and continued initiatives such as the “HerSpark” sports scholarship programme.

This initiative is designed to support young women athletes across different sports disciplines. The report highlights that selected participants receive a three-year scholarship that covers training, accommodation, nutrition, and education.

The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Inspire Institute of Sport. It aims to provide equal opportunities to girls from different backgrounds, especially those who may not have access to professional sports training.

The report suggests that such initiatives are aligned with broader goals of gender inclusion and empowerment.

Environmental Responsibility Linked to CSR Vision

While CSR spending is reported separately, the company’s annual report also links these efforts with its broader sustainability goals. Britannia Industries continues to focus on environmental responsibility alongside social initiatives.

According to the report, the company maintained its plastic-neutral status for the fourth consecutive year. It processed around 47,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste, which exceeded the total plastic used in its operations.

In terms of energy use, renewable sources contributed about 22 percent of the company’s total electricity consumption during the year. The report indicates that the company is working towards increasing this share further in the coming years.

The company also invested around Rs 17.11 crores in energy-efficient technologies and solar installations. These measures helped reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency.

Although these investments are not classified under CSR spending, they reflect the company’s overall approach to responsible business practices.

Water and Resource Management Efforts

The annual report also highlights efforts related to water conservation. Britannia Industries implemented several measures to reduce water usage across its manufacturing units.

The company achieved a freshwater consumption intensity of 0.87 kilolitres per tonne of production. This was made possible through the use of efficient technologies such as low-flow taps and improved cleaning systems.

These efforts show that the company is focusing on resource efficiency as part of its sustainability strategy, which complements its CSR activities.

Governance and Transparency in CSR

According to the annual report, Britannia Industries has a structured governance framework for CSR. A dedicated CSR Committee oversees the planning, implementation, and monitoring of all CSR programmes.

The report states that all projects are aligned with Schedule VII of the Companies Act, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Regular reviews are conducted to track progress and measure outcomes.

The inclusion of impact assessment as part of CSR spending also reflects an increased focus on accountability. By evaluating the effectiveness of programmes, the company aims to improve future interventions.

Recognition and Awards

The annual report highlights that Britannia Industries received several recognitions for its CSR and sustainability efforts during the year. These include awards for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.

While such recognitions are mentioned in the report, the primary focus remains on programme outcomes and community impact.

A Continued Commitment to Social Development

Overall, Britannia Industries Limited’s CSR spending of Rs 50.44 crores in FY 2024–25 reflects a consistent and structured approach to social responsibility. The company has focused on key areas such as nutrition, healthcare, women’s empowerment, and sustainability.

According to the annual report, these initiatives are designed to create long-term value rather than short-term impact. By working through partnerships and established systems, the company aims to reach a larger number of beneficiaries.

As India continues to address challenges related to health, nutrition, and social inequality, such corporate interventions play a supportive role. The report indicates that Britannia Industries plans to continue its efforts in these areas in the coming years.

The CSR disclosures suggest that the company is maintaining a steady approach, focusing on measurable outcomes and sustained engagement with communities.
