Dr. Jawahar Surisetti, Vice Chancellor of Rungta International Skills University, said, "Education must evolve to address the pressing challenges of sustainability, social responsibility, and inclusive development. As India moves toward the vision of Viksit Bharat and emerges as one of the world’s leading economies—now the fourth-largest—our higher education system must prepare professionals who can balance economic growth with social and environmental responsibility. The National Education Policy (NEP)encourages interdisciplinary learning and strong academia–industry partnerships, and this collaboration with India CSR reflects that spirit."

He added, “Through these programs in CSR and Sustainability, we aim to create meaningful academic pathways that will equip students and corporate professionals with the knowledge, skills, and ethical leadership required to drive sustainable development and responsible business practices in India and beyond.”

Rusen Kumar, Founder and CEO of India CSR, said, “India CSR has long advocated the importance of structured learning in CSR and sustainability. Today, this is truly the need of the hour. India’s CSR and sustainability ecosystem is evolving rapidly, and there is a growing demand for trained professionals who understand CSR law, ESG frameworks, sustainability science, and development practice within the Indian regulatory and socio-economic context. Our partnership with Rungta International Skills University aims to build a strong academic ecosystem that equips students and industry professionals with the knowledge, practical exposure, and industry connections necessary to drive meaningful social impact and responsible business practices.”

He further added that the need for such academic programs is increasing as CSR and ESG become central to modern corporate governance and sustainable development strategies.

“India today has one of the most advanced CSR and sustainability frameworks in the world. With mandatory CSR spending under the Companies Act, ESG reporting requirements under SEBI’s BRSR framework, and the country’s national commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2070, organizations across sectors are actively seeking professionals trained in sustainability reporting, compliance management, and impact evaluation. Programs like these will help prepare the next generation of leaders who can guide businesses and institutions toward responsible and sustainable growth.”

The programs will commence from the Academic Session 2026–27 (July 2026) at the Bhilai campus of the University, located approximately 30 km from Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, in the Raipur–Bhilai academic and industrial corridor.

The courses will be conducted in accordance with UGC guidelines, ensuring high academic standards and alignment with national higher education standards.

Interdisciplinary Learning and Industry Partnership

The programs are designed as an interdisciplinary blend of management, science, social sciences, and the practical art of CSR, sustainability, ESG, and sustainable development. The curriculum will emphasize strong academia–industry collaboration, ensuring that students gain both theoretical understanding and real-world exposure to CSR practices and sustainability challenges.

Through this collaboration, students will benefit from industry interactions, internships, expert lectures, research initiatives, and exposure to real CSR and sustainability projects, preparing them for leadership roles in the evolving sustainability ecosystem.

Significance of CSR and Sustainability Education

India is a global pioneer in mandating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through the Companies Act, 2013, becoming the first country in the world to require corporate social investment legally.

Under the law, eligible companies are required to spend at least 2% of their average net profits on CSR activities. What began as a regulatory compliance requirement has gradually evolved into a value-driven investment framework, encouraging companies to contribute strategically to national development priorities.

Today, CSR and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles are reshaping the way businesses operate, how communities develop, and how sustainability performance is measured. CSR implementation, ESG reporting, and sustainability compliance have become central components of modern corporate governance.

India’s CSR ecosystem has emerged as one of the largest organized social investment mechanisms in the world.

“The CSR spending in India reached Rs. 34,909 crore in FY24, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.74% between FY20 and FY24. The report further highlights that 63% of companies exceeded the mandated CSR spending in FY24, compared to 34% in FY20, reflecting a growing corporate commitment toward responsible and sustainable development.”, Rusen Kumar said.

“In this expanding ecosystem, there is a rising demand for professionally trained experts who understand CSR strategy, ESG frameworks, sustainability reporting, impact assessment, and regulatory compliance.”, he further added.

The academic programs introduced by Rungta International Skills University in collaboration with India CSR aim to address this gap by preparing students to become CSR leaders, sustainability managers, ESG analysts, and social impact professionals capable of driving meaningful change across industries.

Dedicated Library and Resource Centre

To strengthen academic learning and research, the university will also establish a dedicated library and resource centre for CSR, ESG, and sustainability studies under the leadership and knowledge guidance of India CSR. The facility will provide students, faculty members, and researchers with access to specialized books, academic journals, industry reports, policy documents, and global best practices related to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. The resource centre will serve as a knowledge hub for research, policy dialogue, and practical learning, supporting the development of future CSR leaders while enriching the academic ecosystem for CSR and sustainability education at the university.

A Step Toward Strengthening CSR Education in India

The collaboration represents a significant initiative to strengthen formal education in CSR and sustainability, areas that are becoming increasingly important for businesses, governments, and civil society.

By introducing dedicated academic programs in this field, Rungta International Skills University and India CSR aim to develop a strong talent pipeline capable of leading sustainable development initiatives and responsible corporate practices in India and beyond.

The programs are designed as an interdisciplinary blend of management, science, social sciences, and the practical art of CSR, sustainability, ESG, and sustainable development. The curriculum will place strong emphasis on skilling, practical learning, and academia–industry collaboration, ensuring that students gain both theoretical understanding and hands-on exposure to CSR practices and sustainability challenges. Through internships, industry interactions, live projects, and field engagement, the programs aim to develop job-ready professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to lead responsible business and sustainability initiatives.

Raipur–Bhilai Emerging as an Academic and Skill Development Hub

The Raipur–Bhilai region of Chhattisgarh has been steadily emerging as an important center for higher education, technical training, and skill development in Central India. With the presence of leading universities, engineering institutes, and skill-based educational institutions, the region is attracting students from across Chhattisgarh and neighboring states such as Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Bhilai, historically known for its industrial ecosystem anchored by the Bhilai Steel Plant, has gradually evolved into a dynamic academic hub where industry and education intersect. The introduction of specialized programs in CSR, ESG, and Sustainability at Rungta International Skills University further strengthens this academic landscape by connecting education with emerging global priorities such as responsible business practices, social impact, and sustainable development.
