UDAIPUR (India CSR): Hindustan Zinc, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer is scripting one of India’s most ambitious stories of animal welfare and biodiversity conservation. With interventions spanning more than 8.7 lakh animals through animal welfare health camps, the company has gone beyond conventional social impact, bringing together a vision where wildlife and ecosystems thrive in harmony with communities.
Crocodile Habitat Restoration
A significant step in this journey is the Rs 5 crore MoU with the Udaipur Forest Department to develop the Baghdarra Crocodile Conservation Reserve. The project focuses on restoring crocodile habitats—one of India’s most iconic reptiles—through afforestation beginning with 5,000 saplings, building water conservation structures, and creating eco-trails for responsible nature experiences. The initiative positively impact on more than 200 species in the ecosystem and additionally, community-led eco-tourism facilities are being developed to generate sustainable livelihood opportunities for local residents.
Commitment To Conservation
Speaking on the company’s approach, Arun Misra, CEO – Hindustan Zinc, said, “Animal welfare and biodiversity conservation are at the heart of our sustainability agenda. Our interventions not only protect endangered and native species but also improve the health and resilience of livestock that rural communities depend on. These initiatives reaffirm our belief that ecological conservation and community prosperity go hand in hand.”
Peacock Conservation Park
Alongside this, Hindustan Zinc has developed a Peacock Conservation Park at its Kayad Mine in Rajasthan, dedicated to India’s national bird. This initiative is complemented by the creation of endangered species nurseries at Kayad and Rampura Agucha (India’s largest underground mining operations) mines, providing a safe space for endangered flora to grow and propagate. These nurseries play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and creating resilient ecosystems in areas affected by industrial activity.
Biodiversity Enhancement Efforts
To further enhance biodiversity, the company has installed bird nesting and feeding stations, butterfly gardens, and water ponds across multiple operational sites. These efforts are designed to create microhabitats that attract and sustain local species, increase pollination, and improve water retention in ecosystems. These small yet meaningful interventions collectively create a significant impact, showcasing how industrial landscapes can evolve into thriving biodiversity hubs. In partnership with The Animal Care Organization (TACO), a flagship initiative of the Vedanta Group, Hindustan Zinc is further strengthening its contribution to animal welfare initiatives.
Animal Welfare Programs
Hindustan Zinc’s animal welfare initiatives have made a wide-reaching impact through its Animal Welfare Centre, Animal Health Camps, Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) prevention drive, and Reflective Collar distribution activities. These interventions improve livestock health, lower disease risks, and equip farmers with resources to enhance productivity—creating a strong link between animal well-being and rural prosperity.
Sustainable Growth Integration
Aligned with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the company integrates scientific conservation, community engagement, and sustainable development into its operations. In doing so, Hindustan Zinc is demonstrating that industrial growth and ecological stewardship can advance together.
