Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee has been named in an investigation into alleged violations of Uttarakhand’s land laws, raising concerns about affluent individuals misusing land acquisition regulations. Reports reveal that Bajpayee purchased 15 nali (approximately 3,600 square yards) of land in Lamgada, ostensibly for a yoga and meditation centre, but the land remains unused.

The state government, under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has launched a comprehensive crackdown on land law violations, scrutinizing 23 cases, including those involving politicians, bureaucrats, and other high-profile individuals.

Action Initiated Against Alleged Violators

Sources confirm that authorities have initiated action in five land purchase cases in Ranikhet tehsil, where approximately 50 nali of land was acquired illegally. Investigations are also underway in Almora district, where administrative probes have uncovered violations in Pleasant Valley and Kataramal, both located in Majkhali.

These findings have prompted a statewide inquiry into land acquisitions, with officials underlining the need for stricter regulations. “Currently, 11 cases are in court, while 10 are being investigated,” said a government source.

Bajpayee’s land purchase in Kapkot village, Lamgada Tehsil, is at the centre of the controversy. The acquisition, made in 2021, allegedly exceeds the state’s legal limit of 1.25 nali for individual land ownership. While the land was reportedly intended for a wellness centre, no development has taken place, triggering suspicions of misuse.

“The loopholes in land acquisition regulations have created opportunities for misuse by the wealthy elite,” noted a senior government official. Authorities are now collecting evidence to determine whether Bajpayee’s purchase violated state laws.

Uttarakhand’s Land Laws: A History of Exploitation

Uttarakhand’s land acquisition laws were originally designed to protect the state’s natural resources and ensure equitable land distribution. However, lax enforcement has allowed affluent individuals, including celebrities, politicians, and bureaucrats, to exploit these regulations.

The state government is particularly focused on preventing “outsiders” from purchasing large tracts of land for speculative investment, which often disrupts local ecosystems and displaces communities.

Dhami Government’s Push for Stronger Land Laws

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has vowed to address these issues by introducing stricter land laws during the upcoming Budget session of the Assembly. A meeting chaired by the CM at the Bhararisain Assembly building in Gairsain emphasized the need for a robust regulatory framework.

“Stronger regulations will close loopholes and ensure that Uttarakhand’s land is preserved for its rightful residents,” stated the CM. The proposed framework aims to balance development with environmental preservation, protecting the state’s unique geographical and cultural heritage.

Future Measures: Regulating Land Ownership

Under the state’s existing laws, individuals are prohibited from purchasing more than 1.25 nali of land. However, recent cases suggest that these limits are frequently bypassed. Ranikhet SDM Rahul Anand confirmed that investigations are ongoing. “Action will be taken once all evidence is collected,” he said.

The government is also exploring ways to streamline land acquisition processes to enhance transparency and accountability. Proposed measures include stricter vetting of land transactions, increased penalties for violations, and enhanced monitoring systems.

You Learn: A Turning Point for Uttarakhand’s Land Laws

The ongoing investigations mark a turning point in Uttarakhand’s approach to land regulation. By addressing high-profile violations and introducing stricter laws, the Dhami government aims to protect the state’s resources and ensure equitable development.

As the inquiry progresses, the outcomes of these cases, including Manoj Bajpayee’s, will likely set a precedent for land governance in the state. These efforts underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding Uttarakhand’s heritage and promoting sustainable growth.
