Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai Highlights State’s Commitment to Green Development

RAIPUR (India CSR): In a landmark move to address climate change and strengthen forest conservation, Chhattisgarh announced the establishment of its fourth tiger reserve, the Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve. This step, aligned with the state’s Green Summit 2024, underscores Chhattisgarh’s proactive efforts to enhance ecological sustainability and renewable energy capabilities, as articulated by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.

Chhattisgarh’s Green Initiatives: Solar Power and Beyond

Inaugurating the Chhattisgarh Green Summit, Chief Minister Sai emphasized the urgent need to address the adverse effects of climate change, such as rising temperatures and extreme weather events. He noted the country’s escalating heatwave crisis, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels, posing serious challenges to public health and environmental stability.

To counter this, Chhattisgarh has ramped up its commitment to renewable energy. Sai highlighted the expansion of solar and hydropower projects, with a vision to support India’s national goal of achieving 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030. “Chhattisgarh is taking decisive steps to combat climate change,” Sai stated, stressing the state’s pivotal role in this national mission.

Establishing the Fourth Tiger Reserve: A Step Towards Conservation and Community Development

The Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve, spanning over 2,829 square kilometers, will be Chhattisgarh’s fourth protected tiger habitat, joining Indravati, Udanti-Sitanadi, and Achanakmar reserves. This new reserve combines the Guru Ghasidas National Park and the Tamor Pingla Sanctuary, encompassing the districts of Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, Koriya, Surajpur, and Balrampur.

The decision to develop this reserve has been a long-anticipated one, receiving in-principle approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) nearly a decade ago. The state Cabinet recently approved the initiative following recommendations from the State Wildlife Board, with final concurrence from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.

Sai affirmed that the tiger reserve would not only protect biodiversity but also bolster local communities. “This project will drive eco-tourism, creating job opportunities for locals as guides, vehicle operators, and resort managers,” he said. By facilitating local employment, the government aims to foster an economic model that aligns conservation efforts with sustainable development.

The Role of the Chhattisgarh Green Summit 2024

The three-day Chhattisgarh Green Summit aims to promote sustainability through collaboration with local communities, environmental experts, and policymakers. Organized by the Chhattisgarh Forest and Climate Change Department in partnership with Vibgyor NE Foundation, the summit will feature in-depth discussions on the interdependence between forests and local communities, and strategies for ecological restoration.

Sai emphasized that the summit aligns with the state’s vision to protect Chhattisgarh’s environment while advancing its renewable energy capacity. Sessions will delve into topics such as Indian forestry, ecosystem services, and sustainable practices that preserve both biodiversity and community welfare.

Expanding Green Cover: Boosting Forest Conservation

Currently, nearly 44 percent of Chhattisgarh’s geographical area is covered by forest—a significant achievement given the state’s focus on increasing this percentage as part of its climate resilience plan. The establishment of the Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve will further boost this green cover, providing a habitat for endangered species and enhancing ecological balance. Forest conservation is essential to mitigate climate change, as forests play a critical role in carbon sequestration.

Additionally, the creation of new protected areas aligns with the national Project Tiger initiative, which supports tiger habitats and biodiversity conservation. With the NTCA providing additional funding for the reserve’s operations, the project will help promote conservation while enabling sustainable livelihood projects for communities residing in core and buffer zones.

Chhattisgarh’s Vision for a Sustainable Future

Chhattisgarh’s initiatives reflect a commitment to combatting climate change while fostering economic and social benefits for its citizens. Through efforts such as expanding forest areas, encouraging eco-tourism, and investing in renewable energy, the state is setting a benchmark in climate action and environmental preservation.

As Chief Minister Sai aptly summarized, “Chhattisgarh’s journey towards a greener, more sustainable future is not only a commitment to the planet but also a pathway to prosperity for our people.” With strategic initiatives and a focus on holistic growth, Chhattisgarh is poised to emerge as a significant contributor to India’s environmental resilience and sustainable development goals.
