Corporate Governance: Concerns Over Representation of Differently-Abled at Lupin Limited

Despite being a 56-year-old company, Lupin Limited has shown no progress in fulfilling its public commitments towards appointing persons with disabilities.

MUMBAI (India CSR): Lupin Limited, a leading entity in the pharmaceutical sector established in 1983 and headquartered at Kalpataru Inspire, Mumbai, is under scrutiny for its underwhelming representation of differently-abled individuals in the workforce for the fiscal year 2022-2023. Despite its listings on major stock exchanges like BSE and NSE, the company’s reported figures on differently-abled employment highlight a discrepancy between its declared inclusive policies and the actual on-ground reality.

Concerning Trends in Differently-Abled Employment

Despite the substantial total workforce of 18,731 employees and workers, specific details concerning the representation of differently-abled individuals—both in permanent and non-permanent roles—are glaringly absent or marked as non-applicable in company reports. This omission is critical given the company’s primary business in manufacturing and sales of pharmaceuticals, which constitutes 97.62% of its turnover, indicating significant capacity for inclusive employment practices.

What Lupin Says

Lupin Limited in its BRSR Report 2022-23 said, “We understand that diversity drives innovation and enhances our ability to serve our communities better. We are committed to building an organization where every employee, regardless of their disability, gender, age or sexual orientation, is respected and appreciated for their individuality. We employ differently abled employees at our offices and plants as per their suitability. Our sites are equipped with the basic facilities required for people with any form of disability.”

Analysis of Differently-Abled Employees

Permanent Differently-Abled Employees

The data lacks specific numbers and percentages for both male and female differently-abled employees who are permanently employed. This omission raises questions about the effectiveness of Lupin’s diversity policies and their implementation on the ground.

Other than Permanent Differently-Abled Employees

This category is marked as not available (NA), indicating a gap in the company’s reporting or possibly a negligible number of temporary differently-abled hires. This lack of data transparency fails to assure stakeholders of the company’s commitment to inclusive hiring practices.

Total Differently-Abled Employees

Without concrete numbers in the subcategories, the total figure of differently-abled employees remains unclear, casting doubt on the inclusivity of Lupin’s workforce.

Analysis of Differently-Abled Workers

Permanent Differently-Abled Workers

Again, specific figures are missing for both male and female permanently employed differently-abled workers. This lack of detail makes it difficult to assess the actual integration of differently-abled individuals in operational roles.

Other than Permanent Differently-Abled Workers

With no available data, it is impossible to determine the presence of temporary or contractual differently-abled workers, further muddying the transparency of Lupin’s employment practices.

Total Differently-Abled Workers

The absence of detailed statistics under both permanent and non-permanent categories leaves a significant gap in understanding the overall employment of differently-abled workers.

    • Total Employees: 17,852
      • Male: 16,888 (95%)
