The Kerala Story is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. It stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani. The plot follows a group of women from Kerala who are coerced into converting to Islam and joining the Islamic State. The movie is based on real events, the producers of the movie claim1.

The Plot

The movie revolves around three protagonists: Shalini (played by Adah Sharma), Nimah (portrayed by Yogita Bihani), and Geetanjali (acted by Siddhi Idnani). These young women are nursing students from Kerala who share a hostel room with Asifa (played by Sonia Balani), a Muslim girl. Asifa gradually influences them to convert to Islam by offering them money, gifts, and love. She also introduces them to a preacher named Umar Sharif (played by Chandra Shekhar Dutta), who brainwashes them with extremist ideology and promises them a better life in the Islamic State. The girls change their names, appearance, and lifestyle, and eventually agree to travel to Afghanistan to join the terrorist organization.

However, their dreams turn into nightmares when they realize the harsh reality of living under the Islamic State. They face violence, torture, rape, and slavery at the hands of the militants. Shalini, who becomes Fatima Ba, is the only one who manages to escape and narrates her ordeal to the Indian authorities. The movie depicts her struggle to survive and return to her homeland.

The Controversy

The movie has sparked a lot of controversy and criticism from various quarters. The Kerala government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, has banned the movie in the state, alleging that it is a propaganda film that defames the state and its people. The government has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the movie’s release across the country2. The government has claimed that the movie is based on false and fabricated facts and that there is no evidence of any mass conversion or radicalization of women from Kerala.

The movie has also faced opposition from some Muslim groups and activists, who have accused the movie of spreading Islamophobia and communal hatred. They have staged protests and demanded a ban on the movie. They have also filed complaints against the makers and the actors of the movie, alleging that they have hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslim community.

On the other hand, the movie has received support from some Hindu groups and leaders, who have praised the movie for exposing the truth and raising awareness about the issue of religious conversion and radicalization. They have also defended the movie’s right to freedom of expression and artistic creativity. They have urged the people to watch the movie and form their own opinions.

The Response

The movie has received mixed reviews from the critics and the audience. Some have lauded the movie for its bold and realistic portrayal of a sensitive and relevant topic. They have appreciated the performances of the actors, especially Adah Sharma, who has delivered a powerful and convincing performance as Shalini/Fatima Ba. They have also commended the direction, cinematography, and editing of the movie.

However, some have criticized the movie for its biased and sensationalized depiction of the issue. They have pointed out the flaws and loopholes in the script, the dialogues, and the characters. They have also questioned the authenticity and credibility of the movie’s sources and claims. They have argued that the movie is a one-sided and exaggerated version of the reality and that it ignores the socio-economic and political factors that contribute to the phenomenon of religious conversion and radicalization.

The Verdict

The Kerala Story is a movie that has stirred a lot of controversy and debate in the country. It is a movie that claims to be based on real events, but also faces allegations of being a propaganda film.
