The Max series wraps up its second season with a shocking twist, a heartwarming reunion, and a glimpse of the future.

The fans of And Just Like That… were in for a treat as the season 2 finale aired on Thursday, August 24, 2023. The episode, titled “The Last Supper Part 2: Entrée”, delivered on the promise of bringing back Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, albeit in a brief but memorable phone call. The episode also resolved some of the major plotlines of the season, such as Carrie’s relationship with Aidan, Miranda’s divorce from Steve, Charlotte’s marital woes with Harry, and Nya’s career aspirations. Here are some of the highlights of the episode:

Samantha Jones is back!

The episode opened with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) preparing for her last dinner party at her iconic studio apartment, which she decided to sell after buying a spacious penthouse with Aidan (John Corbett). As she was setting the table, she received a call from none other than her long-time estranged bestie, Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). Samantha, who was in London, had planned to fly in for one night only to say goodbye to the apartment, but her flight was delayed. She asked Carrie to put her on speakerphone and greeted her other friends, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis), who were also present. She then thanked the apartment for being the witness of their fabulous adventures and signed off as “Annabelle Bronstein from Injah”, a reference to her fake identity from an episode of Sex and the City. The call was a touching tribute to the character and the actress who played her, and a way of acknowledging the fans’ love for Samantha.

Carrie and Aidan break up… again

Carrie and Aidan’s reunion was one of the most controversial aspects of the season, as many fans felt that it undermined Carrie’s previous choices and her love story with Big (Chris Noth), who died in the first episode. The finale showed that Carrie and Aidan were not meant to be together, as they faced several obstacles in their relationship. Aidan had to deal with his son Wyatt’s drug addiction and car accident, which kept him away from New York. Carrie had to adjust to living in a huge apartment that felt empty without Big. She also had to cope with Aidan’s reluctance to visit her old apartment or meet her friends. The final straw came when Carrie found out that Aidan had secretly bought her old apartment without telling her, intending to surprise her with a renovation. Carrie felt betrayed and realized that Aidan was trying to erase Big from her life. She confronted him and told him that she loved him, but she loved Big more. She also said that she needed to move on and find herself again. They parted ways amicably, but with a hint of sadness.

Miranda and Steve are friends again

Miranda and Steve (David Eigenberg) had a tumultuous season, as Miranda came out as queer and fell in love with Che (Sara Ramírez), a podcast host and comedian. Miranda left Steve and moved out of their house, causing a rift between them and their son Brady (Niall Cunningham). Miranda also had a falling out with Che after they had sex at Carrie’s apartment without her consent. Miranda realized that she had made a mistake and tried to apologize to Steve. She visited him at his beach shack on Coney Island and found him speaking Spanish to one of his workers who actually spoke English. She told him that she didn’t want to be just someone in his past, but someone in his present. Steve agreed to be friends with her and hugged her warmly. Brady saw them and smiled, happy to see his parents getting along.

Charlotte and Harry work on their marriage

Charlotte and Harry (Evan Handler) had some marital problems this season, as Charlotte felt neglected by Harry’s busy work schedule and lack of romance. She also struggled with balancing her roles as a mother, a wife, and an art dealer. She found solace in drinking wine with Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker), a fellow parent at her daughters’ school who became her friend. Charlotte got drunk at Lisa’s housewarming party and ended up kissing Anthony (Mario Cantone), her friend and former wedding planner who was married to Stanford (Willie Garson). Charlotte regretted the kiss and confessed it to Harry, who was hurt but forgave her. They decided to work on their marriage and spice up their sex life. They also agreed to support each other’s dreams: Harry encouraged Charlotte to pursue her passion for art dealing, while Charlotte supported Harry’s decision to quit his law firm and start his own practice.

Nya gets a new opportunity

Nya (Karen Pittman), Miranda’s law professor and friend, had a successful season as a lawyer and an academic. She won a high-profile case against a pharmaceutical company that caused the death of her brother. She also got elected into the American Law Institute, a prestigious organization of legal scholars and practitioners. However, she felt lonely and unhappy, as she missed her ex-husband and her family. She confided in Miranda, who advised her to follow her heart and do what makes her happy. Nya decided to take a sabbatical from Columbia and accept a teaching position at Yale Law School, where her ex-husband was also working. She hoped to reconnect with him and start over.

The last supper

The episode ended with Carrie hosting her last supper at her old apartment, with Miranda, Charlotte, Nya, Anthony, Harry, Steve, Brady, and Rock (Alexa Swinton) as her guests. They toasted to Carrie’s new chapter and reminisced about their memories in the apartment. Carrie also revealed that she had adopted a kitten named Shoe, who was hiding under the bed. She said that Shoe was her new companion and that she was ready to embrace the unknown. The episode closed with a montage of Carrie’s past moments in the apartment, from her first date with Big to her last call with Samantha. The final shot showed Carrie leaving the apartment for the last time, with Shoe in her arms and a smile on her face.

The season 2 finale of And Just Like That… was a satisfying conclusion to a season that had its ups and downs. It paid homage to the legacy of Sex and the City, while also setting up new possibilities for the future. The show has been renewed for a third season, which will hopefully continue to explore the lives and loves of these iconic characters.
