The Journey from Education to Entrepreneurship

Rahul Dash was born in 1986 and completed his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 2008. He then pursued his PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad, graduating in 2010. He joined McKinsey & Company as a management consultant, working on various projects across sectors and geographies.

However, he had a strong entrepreneurial itch and decided to leave his lucrative job to start his own venture. He met Manish Taneja, his batchmate from IIM Ahmedabad, who shared his vision of creating an online beauty destination for Indian consumers. They launched Purplle in 2012 with seed funding of Rs 1.5 crore from angel investors.

Career turning point: Deciding to leave the comfort of a job and start Purplle.

A vision for democratizing beauty in India

Purplle is an online beauty platform that offers a wide range of cosmetics, skincare, haircare, personal care, and wellness products from over 800 brands, including international, domestic, and niche players. Purplle also has its own private-label brands such as Good Vibes, Alps Goodness, Stay Quirky, NY Bae, and DermDoc.

Purplle aims to solve the beauty needs of women in tier 2 cities and beyond, who have limited access to offline stores and salons. Purplle leverages technology, data, and content to provide a personalized and convenient shopping experience to its customers. Purplle also offers services such as virtual try-on, beauty assistant chatbot, product discovery quiz, and curated recommendations.

Purplle has grown exponentially over the years, reaching over 10 million monthly active users and delivering to over 25,000 pin codes across India. Purplle has also raised over $100 million from investors such as Verlinvest, Sequoia Capital India, Blume Ventures, IvyCap Ventures, and JSW Ventures. Purplle has also roped in Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan as its brand ambassador.

Rahul Dash believes that success is being able to positively impact the lives of millions of people in his lifetime. He follows the advice of his mother, who once said, “A heart of gold is way more satisfying than a pot of gold.”

He is also involved in various social initiatives through Purplle Foundation, which supports education, health, environment, women empowerment, rural development, and other causes.

Dash’s leadership at Purplle has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, he was included in the Economic Times 40 Under Forty list of India’s brightest young business leaders. His ability to scale Purplle’s business amid the pandemic and make beauty accessible and affordable has been highly commended. Dash serves as an inspiration to many aspiring entrepreneurs, continually shaping the future of online beauty shopping in India with his passion, dedication, and excellence.
